My friend has a ford taurus that the heat does not work on. whenever you turn the knob into the red you hear a clicking sound coming from inside the dash board. I am wondering what this sound could be and if it could be what is causing the heat to not work.

The click you are hearing is most likely the start slenoid making contact, however you should short the large wires @ the solenoid to make certain the starter still doesn't run, if so try tapping the starter with a hammer to shift the comutator a litle and try to start. Even if it now starts the starter will continue to give you problems so the proper fix is change the starter
Where is the clicking noise coming from, the engine compartment or the dash panel? Probably not the heat selector switch, so I'm willing to bet the thermostat is sticking and not opening, which is lesding to you not having heat and the clicking noise you are hearing. Replace the thermostat.
