Re: 2002 escape air bags
Air bags are about $700 a piece from from Ford, you should'nt attempt to work on them because they are a lifesaving device and shouldnt be practiced on EVER. The are also EXTREMELY dangerous to handle because they contain an EXPLOSIVE charge and can injure or kill you.

There is no way to re-set your module if the internal inertia switch has been deployed. Just replace your module with an new one. You will need to make sure that all parts of the system have been repaired before installing and powering up your new module as there is a self test every time the system is powered up. If there is still a fault there will be an error code set in the new module. All impact sensors, seat belt tensioners, clock spring, wiring, and air bags them selves have to be in place and connected.
There are more than one sensor used to deploy the air bag none mounted at the air bag. the switch is a sealed tube with a ball inside ,a magnet to hold the ball at one end and a pair of contacts at the other end. on impact the ball moves forward and closes the contacts. Make sure the battery is removed before playing with air bag switches . It is quite costly if the bag is deployed.
If you have an aftermarket burgler alarm in it i would check wiring where it was installed. If not it is probably a malfunction in the contacts in the steering wheel. If checking the steering wheel unhook the battery and let it sit for a few minutes. It is always good to do this so the air bag will not deploy.thanks
Something is wrong with the SRS. This is not a DIY repair. Take it to a professional for repair. They will reset the light after repairing it. Otherwise the air bag may not deploy in an accident or may deploy at any moment. Don't take the risk. Get this fixed
SECTION 501-20B: Occupant Restraints — Passive — Supplemental Air Bag System
2000 Villager Workshop Manual
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Module —Driver Air Bag
Removal WARNING: The backup power supply energy must be depleted before any air bag component service is performed. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait three minutes. NOTE: Repair is made by installing a new part only. If the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and perform the diagnostic procedure again. If the vehicle was in a frontal collision and the air bag did not deploy, the air bag may not have been needed. Complete a diagnosis of the air bag system before installing a new driver side air bag module (043B13). Refer to Diagnosis and Testing in this section.
Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
Remove the two driver air bag module retaining bolt access covers (one shown).
Remove the steering wheel bottom cover to access the driver air bag module electrical connector.
Disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector.
CAUTION: After removing, discard the driver side air bag module bolts and install new driver air bag module bolts during installation. Remove the two driver air bag module retaining bolts (one shown) and discard.
Remove the driver air bag module.
Separate the driver air bag module from the steering wheel and disconnect the horn pad switch.
If you have any doubts about your ability to safely work on an air bag system, you should have the dealer (or a qualified repair shop) repair your air bag problem. Either way, it should be repaired. Your air bag system may be disabled anytime the warning lamp is on. Your two problems are unrelated.
