Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4WD

1 Answer

2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS transfer case issue.

In AWD it made whining and then a grinding noise. Stopped, drove in reverse for a few feet; heard a clunk, and was able to drive again. Later that same day, it did it again...no luck getting it to move in AWD or 4H (same whining/grinding noise); it moved (no noise) in 4L. Is there some sort of chain drive in there that could be slipping? I really hate to replace the whole transfer case if it's a fairly simple repair. Also, if anyone knows where I can get my hands on some sort of repair DIY manual for this vehicle, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

My question is my 2002 Montero sport takes a while to shift does it mean I need a transmission

If transmission fluid level is up to par then you just might need tranny repair. And that is not cheap.

My 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport makes a high pitched humming noise when in reverse backing up. Does not make it when in gear driving.

If coming from transmission may not be a real issue. If coming from rear of car, likely a rear brake issue.

Find the lower hose. Follow it to the engine. Remove the metal housing from the engine that the lower hose is attached to. The thermostat will be behind it.

It's either the sensor on the top of the transfer case, or the one on the front diff. Look here, scroll down to about the third post.

Programming Key Fob

I have just bought a Shogun Sport Equippe TD, I have not taken delivery yet but I do own a Carisma and the way you program that remote key is to turn on the ignition for 10 sec +'s then switch off and press the close button, this causes the door locks to respond.
