Question about 2004 Cadillac XLR
I am experiencing a problem with retracting the hardtop on a 2004 Cadillac XLR... the windows roll down and trunk opens, the top acts like it wants to retract but that is all the further that it gets. Any suggestions or solutions? I know that there is a sensor in the trunk that requires the luggage rack to be in place and it is in, it seems like it wants to retract but just will not go any further than 1/2 inch... Please help!
Roll both windows all the way down and hold the buttons for 5 seconds, then roll both windows all the way up and hold the buttons up for 5 seconds.this resets all of the computers and sensors for the retract system...

For starters, don't let ANYONE touch your XLR, that isn't an 'XLR CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN' (yes, they exist)! Don't even allow a regular service tech at a Cadillac dealership to work on it, unless you already have a trusted one. Call around to dealerships in your area. Some have them and some don't. You can also call around to private luxury shops, as they may have a XLR Certified Tech. Read the link I attached to this post.

I went through an absolute nightmare with my top (same problem as you). After spendng over $2k at the dealership with mis-diagnosis after mis-diagnosis (hydraulic pump, sensors, etc), I finally found a Certified XLR Tech... Only $200 later, he told me it was just an overdue & well needed computer update!

My 2004 XLR did this exact same thing. I had just installed a Crutchfield module, converting my XM radio to Sirius. The module is located behind the upright console between the seat-backs. Before actually mounting the module, I just temporarily stood it in that area so as to get the best antenna location.
Anyways, short story looong, I retracted the roof, and it hung up half-way through the cycle. Turns out the Crutchfield module caused some of the gearing to hang.
Look deep into the backs of your trunks and you'll see a net. Take that down and see if you can see anything that might be getting caught up in the gearing.

Your best bet is have the system checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ! If it showed a message top not secured there is a DTC stored in the control module ! there are 24 possible DTC'S
