Question about 2002 Mercury Cougar

Cars turns over but won't start

My 2002 cougar is at 110,000 miles and won't start. i'm wondering what might be some of the issues i could look into besides my 110,000 mile service. the ignition turn over but still won't start so i've ruled out my battery as being an issue. had oil /filter change done at 108,000 miles.

I had the same problem on my 1999 Cougar. Check your codes and most likley what ever it says it needs to be replaced. I had to change the main fuse to the engine. It located in the front next to the battery

One thing to check is if the fuel pump is working and what the fuel pressure is. The pump is inside the fuel tank. The pressure must be 35 to 65 psi. The pump can be working but if the pressure is not enough the car will not start.

How can I tell if my fuel pump is bad on my 2002 mercury cougar?

If the car runs, the pump can be very loud if it is failing.
Fuel pressure will be low or zero if the car won't start.

My '95 mighty max with 110,000 miles just had new cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, and PCV valve. New battery timing belt "A" and "B". Timed to 7.5 deg with the timing...

If it is doing this only when you rev the engine after it has been idling a while, it is probably smoke from burning oil. A new set of valve stem seals will probably work wonders in reducing the smoke. Stopping the oil consumption will not only help it to pass a smog test but will also help to keep from damaging your engine and your catalytic converters. 110,000 miles is just barely broke-in for a Mitsubishi engine. However, the seals are probably cracked and broken due to the AGE of the vehicle.

When should the timing belt be changed in a 2002 Golf 2.0L engine?

They are to be inspected at

80,000
90,000
100,000
110,000
120,000

Depending on the condition of the belt it is to be changed at anytime during these inspections. There is no finite figure set by Volkswagen for belt replacement. Typically these last about 100,000 - 110,000 miles in moderate driving conditions.

Always change the tensioner at the same time as the belt. A bad or marginal tensioner will destroy a new belt.

Excessive oil use

the time it takes to use one quart is not the figure I need, how many miles does three weeks represent? 1000 miles per quart is ok, less and you will need new rings in most cases, which of course means an engine overhaul.

You haven't mentioned that it leaks antifreeze..... one alternative i can think of is the thermastat is failing. have you checked the engine oil to see what colour it is.... gray is not a good sign.
