I am looking for a fuse for the engine coolant temperature gauge... is there one and if so, which fuse?

Looking for wire for heater gage temperature


Depending on the year there isn't any . All done by computer on serial data bus communication network. The coolant temp. is supplied to the engine computer By a ETC - engine coolant temp sensor . All the modules on the vehicle ( ABS , air bags , BCM , instrument cluster , RKE module etc... ) Share info on this data bus network . If the gauge isn't working probably bad ,If a communication network problem the gauge will default to fixed temp degree . This is for a 1999 Buick , out of factory service repair manual . But all vehicles are pretty much the same .
Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via the class II serial data line to the instrument cluster, broadcasts the coolant temperature. The instrument cluster compares the temperature data using a 16 point look-up table in order to determine the needle deflection. A smooth filter is used in order to secure a continuous response. The instrument cluster drives the temperature gauge to C (cold) under the following conditions:
• The temperature data is lost.
• The PCM is in a state of health fault.

Normal to COLD?
You would only lose coolant if the engine was overheating - or, as you say - a leak.

It's probably a faulty temperature sending unit - these are common failures. You actually have nothing to worry about. The unit sends a signal from the engine to your temperature gauge in the car. Even if the unit is faulty the engine is still operating at the correct temperature - it's the signal to the temperature gauge that is wrong.

Your temperature sensor will look something like in the image below:

I read your question about the car heater.. No, the sensor wouldn't cause the heater to blow cold air. That fault is either air in the cooling system/heater system, or a blocked heater matrix.

Remove your radiator cap/coolant bottle cap. Open the heater controls to HOT and set on maximum. Start the engine and let it tick over - see if it forces any air out of the system when the heater should begin blowing hot.

If the heater still blows cold it may have a blocked matrix. Try a bottle of radiator/coolant system flush to see if that dislodges the blockage. The instructions will be on the bottle of coolant flush

Where is the tempature guage sensor


The temperature gauge sensor as you call is for more then just the temperature gauge . The temp. sensor is an input to the PCM -engine computer ! If it were bad you would have drivability problems , the transmission would not shift correctly an the check engine light would more then likely be lit .
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The IPC displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the PCM. The body control module (BCM) receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The BCM converts the engine coolant temperature into a percent gage deflection. The IPC receives a message from the BCM via the serial peripheral interface (SPI) indicating the requested gage position. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 38?°C (100?°F) or below if:

The PCM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.

The BCM detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

The IPC detects a loss of SPI communications with the BCM.


Your gauge is more suspect then the sensor . gm had a problem with stepper motors that control the pointer for the gauge !

Engine Temperature Gage at the Instrument Panel not working


Your temp.gauge is probably bad ! Check for voltage at the coolant temp. sender ! You have to check it with the engine running . The red with white stripe should have a voltage the other wire ,yellow with red stripe is ground side ! Instrument panel fuse box fuse # 15 a 10amp fuse powers the gauges ,if your gas gauge works it's not the fuse . The dome lights get there power from an other fuse an circuit ! Did you check the bulb ? Check fuse # 8 IP fuse box , also a 10amp . Check for voltage at the dome light ,switch on !

Location of temperature sensor that operates the temperature gauge


Follow the upper rad hose to the thermostat housing. It will be there. There are two, one is the ECT (engine coolant temperature SENSOR) and the other is the temperature SENDING UNIT (input for temp. gauge ONLY). f83e91b9-4b48-476a-8c50-10735b376bf1.png

if engine over heating coolant over flow jug will boil over you will see steam.sound like you have either faulty engine coolant temperature sensor or could have faulty fans relay or fuse or pcm problem if coolant fans dont turn on.have garage with code scanner that can do a snap shot on coolant temperature sensor check see how hot coolant temperature is see if coolant temperature over 220 degrees engine getting too hot.could have faulty water or blowed head gasket check engine oil on oil dip stick look milkly you have blowed head gasket. i use infra red laser thermometor check see how hot engine is over 107 celsius engine is overheating.

Car overheating


First confirm that the engine IS actually overheating - steam, no heat to the interior etc. Sometimes a temperature sensor will fail and give a misleading 'overheat' reading on gauge. For that matter sometimes the gauge can fail and give the same misleading reading. Check that the cooling fan comes on when the engine temperature starts to rise above 'normal'. If not check (in order) fan fuse, fan relay, fan sensor, fan. Real overheating is caused by a lack of coolant AND/OR lack of coolant flow. Modern cooling systems are 'closed'. In other words there should be little or no loss of coolant. If the level is significantly low you have a leak....either external or internal. With the coolant topped up to the correct level and the radiator cap on, run the engine and look for visible leaks...hoses, valves, radiator etc. Internal leaks, eg. head gasket will usually be accompanied by white exhaust smoke (steam), hard starting, rough running and bubbles in the expansion tank. Sometimes, though NOT always, you will find the engine oil has a milky look and/or engine oil will be mixed in with the coolant.

The check enging light comes on then goes off. I foud out the code po118 engine coolant temp circut high input. is it the coolant temp sensor. if so how do I replace it. It is on a 2004 jetta tdi


According to Autozone.com:

Because ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor procedures vary depending upon their location, first locate the part. You may need to partially drain the engine coolant to prevent coolant spillage.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Unplug the ECT.
  • Then, unscrew it.
  • Reverse the removal procedures to install the new part.
  • Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.

The coolant temperature gauge sensor is a temperature-variable resistor, or thermistor. As coolant temperature increases, the resistance of the sensor decreases or decreases, depending on the type of sensor.
A1 and A2 platforms use a different type of circuit that A3 vehicles. On A1 and A2 vehicles, the circuit is a "resistance to ground" type. A3 vehicles use a "variable voltage" type, where a voltage is supplied to the sensor. Because of the circuitry design on A3 vehicles, testing of the coolant temperature gauge is limited.
The engine coolant temperature gauge uses a heat sensitive sending unit to transmit an electrical signal to the gauge. The sending unit is a heat sensitive variable resistor that is located on or near to the cylinder head and threads into an engine coolant passage. The sensors are a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) type. As the temperature increases, the electrical resistance of the sensor decreases. As the coolant temperature changes, so does the resistance of the sensor. The gauge is calibrated within the operating range of the sensor and interprets the resistance value to display the coolant temperature.
Beginning with model year 1994, the engine coolant gauge and the Engine Control Module (ECM) temperature sensors were combined into one sensor with 4 terminals. The basic operation remains the same in that their resistance decreases as the coolant temperature increases, however the actual resistance values of the 2 sensor circuits are different. The electrical connector of the 4-wire terminal sensor ( 1 and 2 ) is keyed to prevent improper connection of the sensor's electrical circuit.

My 2007 Impala LS says its overheating shut off A/C the temp gauge goes all the way up then in an instant comes back down to normal


CHECK COOLANT LEVEL TO MAKE SURE NOT LOW.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD.CRANK ENGINE LET IDLE FEW MINUTES TURN ON AC MAX LEVEL TO SEE IF COOLANT FANS COMING ON.IF NO CHECK COOLANT FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF COOLANTS FANS COME ON WHILE ENGINE OVERHEATING THERMOSTAT BAD.IF ENGINE OVERHEATING FANS NOT COMING ON YOUR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.

2001 dodge stratus engine temperature gauge spikes occasionally


Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.
