Question about 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Low oil pressure light comes on and goes off

2003 VW Passat has started displaying the low oil pressure light then after a few seconds it goes off. I also hear a new rattle that could be the fan blades on a pump. Could this be the oil pump with a broken blade?

Yes, the oil level was low and I had the oil/filter changed today as I was doing this research. 225,000 miles. I was told the rattle was cam shaft?? Would this effect the oil pressure? Rattle does increase with higher rpms but then will go away completely at highway speeds.

hello again thanks for your update wow 225000 ? you have done well ! and yes the noise you hear was what i suspected ?hence the questions i asked also your oil pressure would suffer low reading due to wear in engine with such high milage however there are oil additives you can buy to help the engine and reduce further wear may i suggest you ask at local motor store/superstore for engine oil additive called X1R this additive comes from the usa and it is fantastic! i have used it for a few yrs both on my car and customers and the feed back is excellent here in uk it is called MOTOR PLUS byX1R and is endorsed by naasa space programme i will guarantee that you will notice/feel a difference and it does everything it says on container and more! if you want to keep the old girl for a few more years/miles and get rid of the noise on camshaft then give the old girl a treat ? you will not regret following this advice i hope you have many more miles and trouble free motoring please come back with an update /reactions if you use this product? and i will be glad to hear what you discover best wishes from uk

hi have you checked oil level in engine ? when/how long ago was the engine oil and fillter changed ? also what is the milage? for your info this fault may be due to one of the above ? or it may be the oil pressure switch on engine faulty? as for new rattle ??can you listen to engine with bonnet open and try to pinpoint approx location this rattle is coming from and also if the engine revs are increased ?does his rattle increase and sound louder in sequence with revs ?

The noise is the chain tensioner in the cylinder head between the two camshafts. it is a job for a proffesional shop. the 1.8t passats had an oiling problem and were fixed with a larger oil filter. some times you have to remove the oilpan and replace the oil pickup tube.

Oil light on when I start, I shut off and light stays off

The oil light is supposed to come on when there is low oil pressure, so when the car starts, the pressure goes from 0 to whatever (25-60psi depending on the engine). As a result, the light stays on for a few seconds at the beginning of the start cycle and is then supposed to go out. If the low oil pressure light remains on, then you either have low oil pressure or you have a sensor problem. If you have low oil pressure, you may need a new oil filter. If the filter was just replaced, then you need to get professional help because low oil pressure will wreck your engine in a hurry. Your engine's oil pump may be faulty and need to be replaced.

The Warning Light Comes on "Stop Engine Low Oil Pressure" what does this mean

car needs oil pressure or bearings will wear out in short time. Do not drive or start engine with this light on. Might only be pressure sending unit. Can replace sending unit and start briefly to see if problem resolves. If light still stays on, shut off engine and have oil pump replaced.

2003 VW PASSAT. Check engine light goes on and

8.5 hrs + parts sounds about right. But why would a 7 year old cars oil pump fail? They usually last a lifetime. Has there been a lubrication problem? Low oil, cheap oil, wrong oil? But then again my daughters 04 Toyota needed a valve job, head gasket and water pump recently. I'm doing 90% of work and it still cost about $2000. Her problem was bad oil!

Oil Light comes on VW passat

Start checking the oil level, if oil is low then the problem is a leak or weared rings.

If oil level is ok, check that the oil pump has enough pressure.

If oil pump is also fine, then scan the ECU (car computer) and replace the sensor if you do not find anything else being wrong.
