I go into my truck to move it and turned the 4 wheel drive switch on. It worked fine. The next day I went out to use it and the light that comes on to show it has gone from 2 wheel to 4 wheel did not come on, nor did the truck go into 4 wheel drive.

replace the solenoid, but,if you are worried about being stranded, while you are there, replace the starter and on all connections, use electrical grease,to keep corrosion away, always use lock washers so nothing gets loose too.
Does it shift to 4wd high range ? If so then shift to 2wd . What is going on here is the transfer case motor is stopping due to the motor position sensor has gone bad which means that you replace the transfer case motor assembly. But if you wish to make it a 2wd for awhile then remove motor and manually turn shaft . This can be done by raising and supporting rear axle truck in park remove motor turn shaft slowly with pliers and rotating the play in drive shaft. There are stamped markings on back of case showing gear positions..
Ok , so you got home , parked it and when you started it up the next day and shifted it into reverse... backed out... and went to shift into drive , it stayed in reverse ? Have you checked to see that the cable has not disjoined itself from the shifter to the trans.? Are you able to engage Park?
i had the same problem with my 03 silverado.it's a internal problem in the 4WD actuator.my truck would go in 4WD sometimes and some other times the service 4WD light would come on and it would not got in..after a while it wouldn't go in at all so i replaced the actuator and it fixed the problem..
