90 Ford Bronco II: You have to put it in whichever gear you want it in before you start it or it wont shift at all. Then once you are going its extremely hard to shift into the other gears. Reverse is the only gear that sounds like its grinding.

Hello, why type of fuel do you use? You could have water in your fuel??. If you are living where the weather is very hot and your having to buy fuel with alcohol 10% or more don't buy this type of fuel. Your 1988 Ford Bronco II is carburetored, and the alcohol will start boiling causing vapor locking this Ford Bronco II. One reason is that early model used an open fuel system and none injectors. With the alcohol additive will low the boiling point of the fuel causing it to boil away; therefore, carburetor can't operate on fuel vapors it has to be liquid. GB...stewbison

1987 ford bronco ll won't go in to 4 wheel drive when i push the 4 wheel drive button


could be a faulty switch or the lock out on the diff may be bad, In woudl start at the switch first and work my way down.

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

you have a wiring problem in the steering colum take the cover off the colum and and look around the shifter and the wires there you will see what is moving and you should find a shorted wire.
