Sounds like the brake light switch on the pedal is out of adjustment.

SOURCE: turn signal light comes on when braking

Probably a bad grounding, causing the current to go other ways than intended i.e through other lamps. Check for corroded lamp sockets or bad ground connections in the tail light assembly, also check the lamps so they are ok.

Good luck!

Rear tail light will not turn off

It's your brake release switch. When you brake you are releasing a button that allows lights to come on. When the little piece breaks off lights stays on. Get electrical tape and tape two stacked nickels tight and neat. Then tape that between brake pedal and button. You should see a little plate sticking out on pedal. The button faces this plate. Watch your fingers.

Brake light switch replacement brake lights stay on in 1990 toyota corolla

IF YOU ARE SAYING THAT YOU HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKE SWITCH AND NOW THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON THEN THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU DID NOT SCREW THE BRAKE SWITCH IN FAR ENOUGH.IT HAS A BUTTON ON THE TIP OF THE SWITCH AND IF THAT BUTTON DOES NOT REST ON THE BRAKE PEDAL,YOUR BRAKE LIGHTS WILL STAY ON.WHEN YOU PUSH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THE BUTTON POPS OUT OF THE SWITCH WHICH MAKES THE LIGHTS TURN ON.WHEN YOU RELEASE THE BRAKE PEDAL,IT GOES BACK UP AND PUSHES THE BUTTON BACK IN WHICH MAKES THE LIGHTS GO OFF.ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ELECTIRCAL PLUG IS CONNECTED SECURELY AND ALL THE WAY PLUGGED IN.I HOPE THIS INFO HELPS, TAKE CARE AND GOOD LUCK, MANNY

When i turn on my lights to car brake lights stay on 91 toyota corrola

Pull up on brake pedal. If lights go out then brakelight switch was stuck. Made out of plastic will need to be replaced. If not climb under dash follow brake pedal up towards top where it goes toward dash. There will be a plunger like switch that comes in contact with brake pedal. Disconnect the wire connector. Lights go out switch is bad.

Brake lights stay on even when the vehicle is not started up.

Sounds like your brake light switch is either stuck or it needs to be replaced.  It is located on your brake pedal and is very easy to change and costs around $20-$30.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!
