Question about 1989 BMW 5 Series

Open Question

1989 BMW 535i. Tranny stuck in limp mode.

Put it on a computer and it came up without any bad sensors. The tech that looked at it was'nt to sure what was wrong. The dyignostic said that it was the sport,econmy,manual. switch.or a relay. I changed out the my next guess is a relay of some sort. I cant find any advanced wiring layouts so Im not to sure were to start... If anyone knows what might be the cause.I have a feeling it has to do with the main comp, But not exactly sure.

    I have the same isee, limp mode. I pilled code 1221 which is pedal position sensor. From my research the tech say that it is a failsafe issue when there is a break in the reading to the -DME COMPUTER.

    My transmission is not stuck in limp mode. It will not go in to reverse. It shifts great in all forward gears. Any ideas???

    Have you checked the harness connector at the transmission? These transmissions are known to leak trans fluid in the connector.

you need to take a look at the light sockets in the trunk area.there are NO wires going to the lights like most cars of the time.if you take a close look,you will see that the whole panel where the lights plug in IS the wiring complete with juat need to unplug each one and scratch all the corrosion off the fixed panel AND the flat prong like connections on the bulb sockets themselves.

every 5 series i have gotten into after being parked for awile had this problem.absolutely no rear lights.and yes,check out the fuse box,but it is most likely this or-

the brake pedal on these cars has a thin plate which the brake light switch/andclutch switch is bolted to.i have also seen in many cases the pedal travelbeing too excessive causing the thin plate to bend slightly causing it not to make contact with the switch,which also won't make the brake light warning lamp come on.but i bet you its those sockets in the trunk.cause if the hot side of one is grounding out-then none of them will work!good luck.

I apologise if this isnt much help, however this is a common query from customers. They're able to pair the phone to the car but not the phonebook or its other functions.

In most cases this is just simply due to the compatability issues between the system integrated into the car and its ability to fully synchronize with the phone. Its not a problem with the car and visa versa its just that particular phone is too sophisticated/complex for the software to handle.

The only way to see which phones are fully compatible is at your local bmw dealer. They should be able to show you a table of which phones are compatible for your model/year and system it operates on.

is the new fuse blown? if it is, determine whether the fuse is being blown during window operation or sunroof operation. whichever of those causes it, then you have a short somewhere on that particular circuit. if it blows before you get a chance to operate the windows or sunroof then there is a wire in one of those circuits which has "key-on" voltage and is contacting ground through a break in the wire. you should also check to see if any other components are on that fuse circuit, such as the lighter. it is common for the lighter circuit to persistently blow due to a stray penny or nickel sitting inside the socket.

getting access to the horns takes time hut check the wires going to the horn and check for voltage

The transmission is in limp-in mode because of the second DTC - TCM (transmission control module) low voltage. The knock sensor code has nothing to do with that. You need to have the TCM and transmission checked out.

Need to know what "trans failsafe mode" message

Trans failsafe is "Limp" mode, it means a sensor has triggered due to a fault in OBC. You need to bring it to BMW or a competent shop to have a fault scan done to identify the actual cause. Limp mode allows you to drive short distance (so you're not stranded roadside)

Based on wikipedia...yes. From 1988-1993. I copied and pasted the information below:

Stuck in limp mode not shift modgler no speed domiter reading burnt wire

bad tranny module, you can find at any junk jard or ebay pull the computer codes to make sure
no comunication with tranny module code 700

I have a 95 GMC 4x2 tranny was going to limp mode after I would drive for a while 15 to 30 miles usually, the garage I took it to said must be clutchs going out and I should replace it, so I did, the...

reset the ECM once it goes into the limp mode and you change the tranny you still have to decode the ECM also check the voltage at the outside plug on the tranny should be 12 volts to atleast 1 pin! if not then check the ECM

sounds like to prndl switch may be malfunctioning.
gear selector switch, which tells the transmission which gear it is in.

01 bmw 325xi intermittent problem -- dsc, brake, abs lights go on, alarm sounds, car goes into limp mode and won't accelerate over 10 mph. If left for 24 hours, all lights are off and car works like...

  check your battery connections.  A loose terminal when cold can cause this.  Your computer is loosing the adaptives for fuel control.  Because your  car has no accelerator cable, they are two sensors one at the pedal and one at the motor that talk to each other without proper grounding and current they will not work causing limp mode.   When it is in limp mode the car should sound funny almost running poorly.  Sometimes the adaptives need reprogramming.  Good luck.  I need more info
