2007 jeep compass starter engaged at all times, burning up starter

The vehicle would not start. The starter has a burnt smell to it. Replaced the starter. The vehicle started after the starter was replaced, but the starter stayed engaged and burnt the new starter. I disconnected the battery to take away power from the starter. Now I'm stuck. There are no technical service bulletins for this concern.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

Electrical burnt smell

If you had a short in the starter motor windings and held the key, you'd get a click and a burning smell. That would be the insulation burning off the electrical windings. There's a 40-amp max fuse in this circuit.

2007 jeep compass, started smoking under the hood like something shorted out, now the starter will not respond. any ideas?

It appears that the starter has staed engaged after the engine started. There is an override clutch on the starter pinion but it is only good for a short time. It seizes up and the starter starts spinning and trying to generate power. In the end it burns out. Pull the starter and have it check out.

Just bought a 2007 Jeep Compass two weeks ago. Was told and have been reading that it should get an average of 25 mpg. I am only getting about 14 mpg. Took it to the Jeep dealership to have a diagnostic...

Since it is used, there are many possible answers to this one. The tires may not be fully pressured, you may need to change the air filter, new oil, as well as it may need a complete tune-up. New spark plugs, wires, fluids, etc. I would start with the cheap things first like filters, fluids and tires. Then check on the plugs. Also, the average of 25 is from the manufacturer and most of the times it's usually highway speeds.

Hope this helps

Flashing orange (!) light in instrument panel

It's a low tire pressure sensor. Each wheel has one, and a bad one will cause this. 2007 and newer vehicles require this. (Isn't that great!) First, set all of your tires, spare also, if it doesn't go away, get it looked at.

2001 jeep smells like burnt wire in the cabin

That smell may be related to an oil leak burning off on an exhaust manifold or pipe. Since you did not report any electrical malfunctions, I'd check that first. When working the engine harder it gets hotter and you will therefore smell the burning more than when just normally driving. I can't see your vehicle so don't give me a bad rating if I'm wrong, but I'd look there first!

2003 jeep liberty driving fine oil light comes on and car dies

Go to the shop, remove the oil dipstick and smell the oil, ( well maybe first you should get a base line by smelling normal, new oil) if you burned up your oil, it will smell really bad like burnt....well burnt oil like when a car is blowing blue smoke. If it smells really bad like burnt, they are probably telling you the truth and you need to find out where the oil leaked out...if it seems like the oil drained out the oil pan or the filter, the people who changed your oil could be held liable for not tightening down those parts properly. Since you werent burning oil, my guess is that you were leaking it. If the motor will not turn over but you can hear the starter engage, you definatley seezed up you engine. But i really really hope that the mechanics are full of **** and that you do not need to replace your engine. No matter what you do, keep any parts removed from your vehicle to have inspected by another mechanic for review. For instance, if you have brake pads replace at the discression of the mechanic, ask for the old brake pads back and take to antoher shop to see if they really needed to be replaced or not.

Not starting replaced alt, starter, solenoid, and battery is good

It sounds like the wires from the battery to the starter solinoid are burned out, possibly even more of them to the main fuse box under the hood. You will have to start looking for the burned wires you can already smell and replace them. Starter and Battery area are a good place to start.
