If the pump is going out, you need to have the clutches checked out as well. When you drop the fluid out of it, look to see if you have metal flakes in the fluid and you'll have black graphite material which is your clutches. Have your TV cable checked for proper adjustment. If the TV (throttle valve) cable isn't adjusted correctly then you'll experience wierd shifting as well. This can only be done at a trans shop because they use an extremely low pressure guage to set it with. At least now I know you're asking about your transmission gears, I think. Try replacing the filter and fluid first.

Chek the transmission fluid level in park engine running . it should be in marked area. also if it is dark brown instead of bright red get the fluid flushed and change filter.if all o.k. but still slow shift you may need a pump.

Speedometer reads 80 at 40mph

Most likely, with a Mustang GT,the rear end gear ratio has been changed. You will need to find out what gear it has in the rear diff.,and then buy the appropriate speedometer gear that goes in the trans.
