Question about 2001 Ford Ranger Regular Cab
I have replaced the plugs, the wires, the 2 coil packs, fuel filter, the throttle positioning sensor and thermastat it seems like it could be the cat but im getting alot of exhaust coming out of the tail pipe. Then I thought maybe the fuel pump. But the truck starts right up 1st shot. Most of the time when a fuel pump goes it just dies.
Try a crankshaft position sensor. Just had a fuel pump installed and pump would not increase pressure properly. System relies on voltage cue from crankshaft sensor. Also some models had bad connections on fuel tank and that messes up voltage.
Some parts are expensive. You need to verify voltage before spending money.

sounds like a bad fuel pump .. you can have it pressure and volume tested .. some ford fuel pumps use plastic impellers that are damaged if you run out of gas ...
