Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Z24, 3.1. Car runs great for a few miles, but shuts off when I come to a complete stop and the check engine light comes on. If I put it in neutral it starts right back up and runs great. But if I put it in drive it will shut off again. I have to keep doing this for a couple of minutes until it stays running in drive. I'm thinking EGR valve??

Thank you everybody for your replies. It seems to want to drive through the brakes at a stop sign, then stalls. Like I said, it starts right back up and runs great, but then stalls again if I put it in drive.

The transmission shifts beautifully, no hesitation, no rough shifts. You can barely feel it shift at all.

Idle is perfect too. Not all over the place, steady right where its supposed to be.

SOURCE: Engine runs rough after about ten minutes /idles really low

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

At red light engine seems like it wants to cut off.

try changing your pcv valve. if its dirty it may be causing the shuttering. as for the check engine light going on and off, you may have a bad gas cap. if the cap is faulty it will cause the engine light to come on at times because of a poor air to fuel ratio.

Stalling

Do this.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

sounds like a fuel filter or more likely a fuel pump fault.low fuel transfer pressure, possibly a dealer would be cheaper than a diy repair unless you have the diagnosis correct.
