SOURCE: I need to replace to steering rack boot only, how

You need to remove the outer tie-rod end. After the boot is replaced. it would be prudent to get the front end alignment checked.

Yes, something is loose.
Stop driving immediately before you kill yourself or someone else, and have it taken to a qualified mechanic for repair.

2007Kia spectra, when backing up from a drive way at low speed & turning the wheel as far as it could to the right the wheel jerked to the left. I would pull it back to the right & it would jerk again

problems in the steering control valves in the rack and pinion unit
take it to an accredited steeing specialist shop and have the systems pressure tested and properly diagnosed

Was driving straight at 40 mph and car steering jerked hard to the right and then left

You\'d better have your rack and pinion (the steering gear) checked. That is where the power steering pump sends the fluid to and returns from there. Something is wrong for it to jerk like that. There must be some undue pressure for it to push the cap up-something like a blockage, perhaps. I would have a shop look at it. It may be time for a new rack and pinion gear. If it comes to that, be sure and have the old PS pump and lines and PS reservoir flushed or cleaned out. You don\'t want any of that old fluid to ruin the new rack. Check for dirt, crud, or sludge in the fluid.

Steering tracking to the right

Please check for a dragging LF caliper. Then be sure the front tires are at the same PSI. Then be sure the problem is not caused by the tires.*
Miss matched BRANDS,sizes or unusual wear patterns on one or both tires will cause a pull.
Tires look good? Rotate them, one side at a time until pull goes away.
Also, to see if it IS a tire problem, swap left to right and see if it pulls to the right.Easier to do that, first.

One more test: With you hands off of the steering wheel, start the car. If the steering wheel jerks to one side, you may have a bad /plugged spool valve inside the rack and pinion.

* I have seen that happen with NEW tires.

Steering is realy touchy need to slow it down on dodge dakota 1997 rack pinion was wondering how to adjust it or if can it acts like it is getting to much pressure to the rack

This could be a couple of things, most like none of them to do with the steering gear itself. If you are used to older types of steering systems that use connecting rods/idler arms/pitman arms, you will need to adjust to the faster response of a rack and pinion steering system. If the problem is that the vehicle seems to "jump" when you give the least bit of pressure to the steering wheel, it could be one of a few things. Tire pressure or belt separation can cause handing issues. Improper alignment, even if the vehicle seems to have no issues with left-or-right pull, can cause erratic steering performance and can amplify issues with hydroplaning in wet conditions. If you have had steering parts replaced, or changed and/or rotated tires recently, I would check those areas first. Lastly, I would ensure that you are using the correct power steering fluid in your rack. Many people use DEXRON ATF, but that is not the recommended fluid for the Dakota rack.

Steering is tight, truck pulls left after left turn, pulls right after right turn

It sounds like you have a bad balljoint or rack and pinion. Another possibility is upper strut bearings.

What is happening is there is too much play in the ball socket. It rocks one way on a left turn and another on a right turn. You did not indicate a 2 wheel drive or 4x4. Some of the strut towers have bearings on top. You should also check for missing metal around the strut tower.

If you have rack and pinion, the hydraulic rods can be bent. But I would go more with the Balljoints because a bad rack and pinion would affect steering effort but not change the tire alignment in both directions.

sound like your powersteering pump or steering rack and pinion
could be bad.i would say it is your rack and pinion because if your pump was bad your steering would be real hard to turn instead of being jerky.jerking is usally the sign of a bad rack
