Sorry to say the code is for an internal problem with the computer.
It could be a loss of power for the memory, or a faulty computer.
If it looses power, it has to relearn the basic settings much like a digital clock switching to 12 noon when you unplug it.
The computer gets power from the battery for the memory part and from the key switch for everything else.
The code will set if you disconnect the battery with the key on.

SOURCE: Engine runs rough after about ten minutes /idles really low

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

SOURCE: I Have a 2002 blazer that starts but motor dies, surges when accelerating

If this engine is a VORTEC then you may have a problem with the internal fuel system. Under the top plenum there is a fuel reg and poppet valves that inject fuel into the cylinders. Sometimes the tubes that run fuel from the reg to the valves can leak and cause your problem. This cannot be found with pressure check because this occurrs after the reg. PS fuel mileage will go down. Let me know if this helps.Moe

SOURCE: P0601 Code. PCM... blah... The vehicle is running

P0601 is an internal PCM failure, meaning it didn't pass one or more of its self-tests. If it is running ok and you don't mind the light being on, drive it. A replacement is several hundred dollars depending on where you are and the market value of the area dealerships.

SOURCE: Engine surges then stalls after a re=start

Check the variable timing sprockes on the camshafts, they come with wimpy rivets to hold them if they break the car runs like it have bad spark plugs of timing is wrong.

My question: what can cause the car to do this?

I assume the car you are talking about is your 1968 Dodge Dart GTS with a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine has a special camshaft, Chrysler P/N 312044, which has a 60 degree overlap in the valve timing, since the engine is built to rev in excess of 6,000 RPM. The problem with your car is obviously a leaky accelerator pump. Why don't you get a car that (1) does not have to run on premium gas (because of its 10.5:1 compression ratio), and (2) uses fuel injectors instead of a wild 4 barrel carburetor made for 1/4 mile drag racing? I happen to know that that is the car you are referring to, because you did NOT say that it WASN'T!

In my 2002 chevy cavalier when applying the gas pedal slightly in neutral or park i hear a click and the rpms go down slightly

first off run the fault codes to indicate any electronic problem. Next check under the accelerator pedal for a loose /broken clip that is allowing the pedal to disconnect from the sensor or cable .

The code P0601 means the internal memory of the PCM (computer) has failed self-test. The PCM may need to be reflashed or replaced. The other codes will probably go away after this.

Need to check for computer codes to be sure. A common problem is when accellerating up an incline, the fuel system can run too lean causing a temporay code to set and by easing off the gas pedal the light should stop after a minute or so
