Renault 9 starter motor just spinning

The Starter Motor on my Renault 9 GTL just spins but doesnt actually make contact with the in engine part its supposed to. Sometimes it will but most of the time it wont i have owned other standard Renault 9's in the past and all i had to do with them was put a few spacers on the starter but in this case that doesn't seem to work and im really hoping i dont have to drop the engine and split the box to sort this one out.

A drop of lubrication on the dog wheel should fix that.

SOURCE: starter spins but doesnt start engine

Starter drive spinning but not shooting out into flywheel for turning engine over. If you remove it & grease up the shaft of the starter that it slides on & keep working it on the bench, you may save some money. Once you have it lubed & working good one bench, put it back in & give it a try. Take a look at gear teeth for damage while it's on the bench as well.

SOURCE: starter motor removal

Dissconnect the battery .the starter is located on the gearbox facing into the flywheel. you need to remove any connectors that are on the back of the starter then take the bolts out that hold it on give it a little shake and it should come out.

The Renault 9 GTL is a 4 door hatchback style motor vehicle with a front mounted engine driving through the front wheels.
Powering the Renault 9 GTL is an overhead valve, 1.4 litre naturally aspirated 4 cylinder motor, with 2 valves per cylinder that provides power and torque figures of 60 bhp (61 PS/45 kW) at 5250 rpm and 100 N·m (74 lb·ft/10.2 kgm) at 3000 rpm respectively.
The engine supplies its power through to the wheels via a 4 speed manual transmission.
Quoted weight at the kerb is 855 kg.
Its maximum speed claimed is 153 km/h, which is 95 mph.

My car won't turn over. i have a new battery on it ( DOUBLE CHECKED ITS FINE) It seems as tho the starter motor is'nt getting enough power to it. It just sounds as though its struggles to turn...

Sometimes the starter motor bushes can be worn out and so will work with a high level of friction which will not power the engine to turn over. Also if the brushes or the commutator in the motor is bad it will be hard to turn.
The starter solenoid also is a suspect as if this is worn out it will be delivering lower current to the motor which will not be sufficient to turn the engine .
So please remove the starter motor and overhaul.. check the starter pinion and flywheel.

Renault 1.5 DCi -Starting problems

Hi,

The ticking sound is the solenoid striking the high current switch to engage the starter. If the starter motor will not crank the engine, it is possible that the battery is under charge or the starter motor would not turn. In some extreme cases, the reason that the starter motor will not turn is because the engine has seized. To determine whether it is the starter motor or the solenoid, you can try jumping the two big terminals of the solenoid to apply straight +12 to the starter motor. If it cranks, then it is the solenoid, if not then it would be the starter motor itself. Of course pls have the battery checked and/or fully charged.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
