Check if the car is firing by pulling an ht lead off the plugs and put another spark plug on the ht and earth the spark plug if it has spark when cranking if it is there check the fuel system if the fuel is getting to the injectors.

Well it could be an engine problem, or a bad connection with one of the battery cables. The engine would require more voltage to crank when it is hot, but not that much.
You might want to have someone check the engine to see how much drag is has when hot, by turning the crank by hand.

2000 Mazda 626 brake lights (all 3) not working.

I know the answer to this. I just fixed my in laws 1999 626 with your exact problem. Power comes through the brake switch, and into what they call a "joint box". Basically this joint box is the back side of your fuse box where all the connectors go. Most likely you have a bad box, or connection at the box. It is the only other thing between your brake switch and rear brake lights.
