95 GMC Sierra 4L60E will not shift down to 1st or up to 4th.
I have a 1995 GMC Sierra 4X4 w/a 5/7 amd the 4L60E Transmission. It shifts great into reverse but when I move the selector over to the overdrive (4th), it does not start out in 1st gear. If I move the selector to first and start moving and then shift it on up to drive or overdrive it rapidly advance to what I think is 3rd gear (regular drive) and will not advance to overdrive (4th). As I slow down it does not shift down and it feels like I am stuck in one gear and takes alot to get going again once I stop. It is fine once i'm going or shift it manually down to first when I stop, but I never can get it to shift in to overdrive (4th) at all and only down to first manually.

The problem may be a faulty shift solenoid in the transmission. Have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes, which will give information to further diagnose the problem. Auto Zone and Advance Auto will do a scan. Once you have the codes, post them on this site, again with vehicle made, model, engine size, and year. We can then further assist you.
THe 4l60 is an electronic produced shift trany, It sounds like the place to start, is to see if you can shift it manually. Starting out in first and work your way up as the vehile speed increases. I have a question for you. Did this problem occur all at once or over time? I would say most common reason is shift solinoid problem, But could be many other reasons like, sticking valve in valvebody, bent or worn linkage, improper fliud pressure to pistons, etc. with your help and imput we can probably narrow the problems solution down.
No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.
Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No
1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only
available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or
has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM,
check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops
again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness
touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in
the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.
No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD
and locks the converter : Shift A solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan.
Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Check to see if your transmission is in the limp mode, which would only give you 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears. No 1st or 4th gear.
