Doesn\'t sound like its flooded Sarah. Sorry, I know that would be a nice simple solution but the facts don\'t add up. Any petrol on the spark plugs would evaporate after an hour or so, so starting it on Saturday would not have affected it this morning. A lot depends on what sort of car it is, but if it\'s an old one with a distributor you could have problems with a faulty distributor cap or distributor leads. If it was damp this morning that would highlight the problem by causing the spark to short across the fault. You could try drying the area around the leads with a hair dryer and see if it starts but be warned - don\'t use anything hotter and certainly never a naked flame. Singed eyebrows or worse..

If your car is fuel injected (no carb) then while cranking, try holding the gas pedal to the floor - this should cut off fuel supply to the injectors. If you need to crank multiple times, don't turn the key to the off position - turn back to ACC.

Flooded 3.7 dodge dakota engine

To start any flooded engine is to allow full air into the engine while cranking. IE with a carby hold the acceleratot flat to the floor until the excess fuel is removed from the cylinders. (make sure that the choke is not stuck closed) Do not pump the pedal as this only makes the problem worse. With efi it should not flood but if you feel that it is flooding check for faulty injectors then again hold the pedal to the floor while cranking

Have a 1999 dodge dakota sport 4 wheel drive with a 5.2 liter motor 158,000 miles my problem is every 3 or 4 days when i go to start it it in the morning will not start after about 5 or 6 times cranking...

a vehicles crank shaft sensor sends a signal to computer, as to tell what revolution the crank is on. you may not get a check engine light. check injectors for leaking in to cylinders, it can cause an excess amount of fuel in cylinder. this may be causeing the no starts and flooding smell. if it starts good warm then check the injectors for leaking. good-luck!! you may also have a bad coolant tempurature sensor. symtoms of a bad cts are--poor cold idle, stalling, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. ( will also ****** timing). its hard to say with out being there, so check out above. good- luck!!

Still cannot start Dodge Dakota;

an engine with lots of miles on them will start using oil and begin to not want to start because the oil fouls the plugs, sometimes even if you clean them doesn't seem to help, but id pull a couple of spark plugs out and look to see if they are very black and oily. if the plugs are not working properly your engine will flood.
check your plugs, if dirty, wirer brush them very good then try again, hopefully it will start, if it almost starts but not quite, then you probably need to replace them.
this may not be your problem, but its where i would start.
hope this helps, let me know
would really appreciate your feedback, please

Engine wont start

Engine is flooded. Car must be taken to Mazda Dealer to have computer reset(flashed). I have a 2004 that needs this done about 3-5 times/year. Weird but true.

2004 dakota won't start

sounds like a crankshaft position sensor..fairly common problem on these 3.7 engines..check for fault codes in engine controller..can mbe hard to get out of engine block..seize in..sometimes have to come out in is located on passenger side rear of engine..1 bolt holds it in..3 wire connector..below exhaust manifold in side of block..fairly inexpensive part..recommend dealer part
