Question about 2005 Buick LaCrosse

3 Answers

Power Steering Pump is whining at only 32,000 miles.

My son inherited my aunt's beautiful 2005 LaCrosse. It only has 32,000 miles on it, but is already out of warranty because it was purchased in June 05. The dealer told me that the power steering pump needs to be replaced for $600+. It seems like an expensive problem to have at this low mileage. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

Just add fluid and it will disappear. To add fluid you have to find the reservoir in the back of your engine, passenger side, not easy to find you need a flash light.

We had one. Just add fluid. The fluid cap is on the passenger side at the back side of the engine, you need a long funnel (pep boys) to get the fluid in.

He added fluid and noise was gone.

putting all the variables together( splashed up snow, high rpms, quick actions of the steering wheel requiring constant pump pressure and the sudden loss of power assist) I would suspect that the power steering belt is loose or missing or needs replacing

The most common source of the whine is the power steering pump is low on fluid or the pump is defective. Check the owner's manual for instructions on how to check the fluid in the pumps reservoir.

Hello takinitlite,

The power steering pump is on the right-side(passenger side)of the engine compartment between the engine and firewall.

Power steering makes high whining noise I had the fluid changed and it did not help the situation. what is next

Change the power steering pump if it bothers you a lot. Otherwise, if power steering performance is ok, and you only notice a whining noise, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

2006 Buick Lacrosse with 63,000 miles. Whining noise expecially when first driving car. Especially when turning corners but also on the straight. Usually gets better when driven 5 miles or so.

Its probably the power steerinng pump. they do this sometimes when they are cold. has to work a little harder. this is normal. you might check the fliud just to make sure it is full.

Whine usually occurs on tight turns maximising pump output and/or pump may be worn and needs replacement. Leakage can be from pump reservor, connection, or power rack and pinion steering assy. Spray off any area with a sign of fluid with a brake clean or carb. cleaner and look for signs of leakage.

Whininhg from power steering pump

That is the power steering belt routed around pump pulley that is slipping . The power steering is located behind the steering column, replacing and re-routing the belt is not an easy repair.

If instead the whining noise comes from under the hood , that is the serpentine belt, that is easier to repair.
