Hi,
There is nothing wrong with this car.. only thing you just need to replace the relay or the fuse which is located in the main fuse box.. OR

This can be the neutral safety switch or the gear position sensor if faulty,Both are located it the transmission area,(gear position sensor is inside the transmission),(neutral safety switch is on the outside).

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, though it is possible that the gear position switch is faulty, I am more inclined to suspect a loose connector. The switch would be at the transmission itself while the connector would just outside of the transmission. You could try ramping the vehicle to gain easy access underneath and perform visual inspection. Initially would be check/clean of the connectors, scraping/removing corrosion and spraying with electrical contact cleaner. Thereafter application of WD40 would also help. The same could be done with the switches.

Post back updates. Good luck and kind regards.

Here has even been reports of continuous dead battery's due to the head light switch turning the lights on and off intermittently and eventually deadening the battery.
The light switch is relatively easy to replace. Simply remove the the two upper and lower steering column covers, disconnect the two wiring harness bulk head connectors, a couple screws and wallah.
Remember your safety and always dissconncet your your battey upon electrical repairs.
Just last week I bought a new head light switch for about $70.00. I would highly recommend buying a new head headlight switch and not buying a junkyard special. You will likely be buying another faulty switch.
Good luck!!!!

My reverse lights and my brake lights will not work with the anti theft light on in the dash

These lights are all computer controlled ! Several modules involved DIM - dash integrated module , RIM - rear integrated module .They share information on serial data communication network . Class 2 an or GMLAN !
The rear fuse block supplies battery positive voltage through the REVERSE LAMP fuse to the coil and switch terminals of the reverse lamp relay. The DIM sends a power mode message to the RIM indicating that the ignition is in the ON position. When the driver of an automatic transmission equipped vehicle places the gear selector in the REVERSE position, the powertrain control module (PCM) sends a class 2 message to the RIM. The message indicates that the gear selector lever is in the REVERSE position. When the driver places a manual transmission equipped vehicle in reverse the reverse gear position switch mounted on the transmission closes. This provides a ground for the reverse gear position switch signal line, informing the RIM that the transmission is in reverse. For both automatic and manual transmission vehicles the RIM then grounds the control circuit of the reverse lamp relay . This energizes the reverse lamp relay, closing the switch side contacts and providing battery positive voltage to the backup lamp bulbs. The backup lamps are permanently grounded at G402. With both power and ground the backup lamp bulbs illuminate. Once the driver moves the shift lever out of the reverse position a message is send either by class 2 by the PCM or the reverse gear position switch opens causing the RIM to remove the ground from the reverse lamp relay control circuit. This opens the contacts in the relay turning OFF the backup lamps.
This is something best left to the dealer or a ASE certified repair shop . Need a factory or professional grade scan tool to diagnose an repair this . http://www.public.asu.edu/~pheanis/documents/VBI_CAN.pdf

Why do I have reverse gear but no reverse lights? Light worked recently, and not bad bulbs or anything, what could it be? I have a 1996 gmc jimmy sls 2wd automatic. Thank you

Does you shift indicator point to "R" when in reverse. The reverse light are switched on by the selector shaft position sensor built into the Parp/Neutral Safety Switch. It may be bad or just out of adjustment.

Auto gearbox works

Check for your reverse lights switch which is located on the gear box housing. Sometimes the switch gets a dirt on the internal side (hole) and cause the fault. I personally before go for a new part,I wash it and blow air in the hole and re fit it and it works.

Reversing light not working

Possible that the trigger switch connection from the reverse gear switch is faulty. You need to check the voltage at the reverse gear switch. If absent the switch must be replaced, If not the wire to the reverse light are open or there is ground issue in the reverse lamp assembly.

Reverse light dont work lights are good

The switch detecting the reverse position of the gear stick may be faulty. If you have automatic transmission the switch is under the transmission lever console as part of the neutral safety switch assembly.

Reverse light doesn't light up every

The travel in the switch has probably increased in the time you have had the car. The switch- or shifting linkage directly related to the reverse light switch- may have some adjustment left. If not probably a new switch would fix it.

I have a 2001 vw passat. my parking lights went out. all the fuses are ok. i installed a new light switch in the dash but the lights still dont work. the turn signals, stop lights, head lights and reverse...

disconnect the reverse gear switch located at the gearbox. It's a two pin Connector with two wires, one of them is BROWN, and th other BROWN with BLUE stripe along. Make a short connection between those two wires, easiest way is to do it by usin simple paper clip. Turn the ignition IGN to ON position. and check the reverse lights. If Lights are on, than you need to replace the switch that you just disconnected as it's faulty.

Update me about your progress and we'll solve this easily.

Good luck

1780 code

P1780 Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction (Only For A/T)
This code is related to a malfunction with the park neutral position switch, it's located on the transmission.
It maybe easier to get a Chilton manual from the autoparts store to locate the sensor/switch. The book runs about $20.
Replacing the switch/sensor may resolve the reverse light problem also.
