99 VW Passat with rough idel

My 99 VW Passat had issues with the ignition coild, so I replaced them. Now all of a sudden the code reader says I am having trouble with my throttle body, VAG code 17967 and 17953. The car will start but will shut off after 5 seconds or so. The car has 106000 miles, but the engine and turbo was replaced at 6500 mile by the previous owner. Any ideas on why the TB just all of a sudden went out? .

Yes I disconnected the battery before changing the ignition coils. I also replaced the ignition control unit when I changed the coils. The car won't even stay running once the engine turns over, so I don't know what the problem could be. My code reader says that the throttle body needs to be changed or replaced.

I have a similar problem. After replacing battery, vehicle would start and then cut off a couple secs afterward so i gave it gas for a little while and vehicle would idle at 500 rpms just a little rough. Now when i put it in gear and give it a little gas something cuts the rpms at about 3k and goes right back down to idle. I wonder if this has anything to do w/ the computer not being reset after battery replace? I have already tried all the do it yourself reset sequences.

I had a cylinder go down, thought it was the coil, but it was actually the ICU, Ignition Control Unit. 118 bucks later it was solved. Huco was the company that made the unit. But the throttle body codes make me believe you disconnected the battery. If you did, let me know, I had that happen too.

Did you disconnect the battery before you toyed with the coils?

  • faraldi May 20, 2014

the battery disconnect issue is that the turbo control information is stored in the volatile memory bank which will forget everything if the battery is disconnected. i disconnected the battery when i replaced the stereo and had the same issue. VW loaded it back in for me when i brought it there. I had a stick shift so i could rev it way up to get it going.

oh i already posted that in a solution, sorry

Unfortunately when you disconnected the battery, the ECU (engine control module) forgot the basic settings to run the car. That throttle body code is one of the symptoms. Try your ac if you are in a warm place, the compressor won't kick on, another symptom. I went through this twice already, once because I was putting in a stereo, the other time the battery went dead. Take it to a good VW dealer, call them first to make sure they can do it. I went to one and they said that this was not possible blah blah blah and wanted to install a new throttle body for 750 just in parts! Of course I went to a different dealer. It is a crime. So, call and find out if they can reload the basic settings. I don't know how you will get there if your car is auto, because it will probably stall at every light. Luckily mine is a manual and I could get through it.
Here is a link to explain further.
Print it out and bring it with you, it's helpful for the mechanics.

Make sure you tell them, reload the settings and clear the codes before you do anything else because the symptoms point to mechanical problems, however it is the computer that is fouling the system.
Good Luck.

How difficult is it to change the ignition switch in a 99 VW passat? Dont want to get in over my head if im gonna have to pull my whole dash apart

There is a lot to changing a ignition switch. If your key is in the dash, you will have to take it off. If it is on the steering column, you have to take that out. There is just no easy way to do it. It is a lot of little things that you change. You can do it, don't get me wrong. It is just rough sometimes cause everything has to go in perfect. Your choice of course, just being honest.

I was in traffic and my 99 VW Passat all of sudden started to rumble and shake and the check engine light came on. What could this be?

first you need to get the code if the check engine light is on then there will be a code, you can go to Autozone or Advance auto parts they will do this for free, then bring it to us and we can help you better. i have a hunch it might be your engine speed sensor .

I have a 2001 vw passat i changed th doors and it will not start what could it be?

I had this happen with a different vehicle. "My" issue was the security system. When I disconnected the wires going into the doors, it tripped the security system into the ignition lockout mode. I had to reset the computer (free and it only takes a few minutes). Mine was able to be reset with one of the code readers from O'Reilly Auto Parts which they will let you use for free. Some vehicles have a reset button built in. If you have a security system on your VW, first make sure all wires were reconnected and not broken during the installation of the doors. If everything checks out ok, then give your local VW dealer a call and ask to speak to someone in the service department. As the service person if there is a security system reset button anywhere on your car.

VW Passat estate 99 T reg. From start up continual misfire and lack of power until engine is warm. Once warm fault becomes intermittent. There are no warning light on dash. I have replaced HT leads with no...

There may be no check engine light but that doesn't mean there isn't a code in the ECU. Especially with a misfire. I'd have the codes scanned and see what you got. The cannister issue isn't going to give you a misfire it will give you stalling and rough idle.
Lets see what ECU is saying. You can go to Autozone if you don't have a scanner they will scan it for free. If scanning turns out negative than have a cylinder leakage test done. This way we can determine which cylinder has the problem and what the problem is.

99 vw passat, when running, MIL lite, on car vibrates- shakes

no flashing light and rough shaking will be part of spark plug but also a very bad miss fire. I am going to guess that your engine is a 1.8t if so you have 4 coils that sit on top of your spark plugs that most likely are arcing you will need to figure out which coil is failing or you can save yourself the trouble and replace all 4 and the spark plugs. before you do that though check your wireing going to your coils look for broken wires or the ground that is next to the #1 coil that is the one closest to the front of the motor and you. hope that helps. that will be the start to fixing your issue also when you pull out the spark plug look down the hole first and make sure that there is not oil in the bottom of the hole if that is the case you will need a valve cover gasket as well. good luck hope that helps

1999 vw golf timing belt...

this is a direct quote when I asked about a timing belt on a 99 passat

"The timing should be Good unless you have Problems with a Rough Idle."

the person has an 85% accuracy rating, so he seems to know what he is talking about. however, if its of major concern to you, its better to replace it before it snaps, adding more money to the repair.
