Think the blend door is not working properly. air conditioning works great, heater works sometimes but most of the time only blows luke warm air, temperature gauge reads normal

Could be a number of possibilities. However, the most likely is loss of freon. The O-ring seals at a number of line connections tend to leak over time. There are other mechanical and electrical possibilities but you should first have someone check the freon charge with a set of gauges to measure the pressures. It might cost you a bit to have it tested but the pressure reading will tell you a LOT of things. In the long run it will save you money over guess-work.

The heater core may be stopped up. Try to back flush it with a water hose.
