What could cause the part of the starter that the wire from the battery connects to start fire once the wiring was replaced? The starter was tested andthe battery was tested, both good. Found lots of

Car failed while driving. thought it was the battery and while the neighbor was jumping the car I noticed a plume of smoke coming from the exact place that later caught fire. Also, when I was attempting to start it, when I turned the key there was a grinding noise that is why I then thought it my be the starter...

I had the same problem, make sure your wires are not exposed and shorting on some piece of metal, that could cause a fire. Other than that I would check that starter again, it sounds like it is seized or maybe you have the wires on backwards. If you have an oil leak and oil gets into that starter it will destroy it. all I had to do on a sable was to replace the belt but look at the battery there should be a wire coming from the battery going to another solenoid mounted under the hood and then going down to the starter get a 12 volt tester and see if you have power going to this solenoid cause it could be dead on one end and not going down to the starter

It could be a faulty radio unit. I had the same thing happen to my 99 taurus and that ended up being the problem.

Check the fuse box and make sure no fuses are blown. I had the same problem with my honda motorbike and thought the worst of it but then checked the fuses and found that one had blown. Once replaced the bike was fine!

what vehicle are you asking about? the normal prob with those symptoms are caused by a flat battery or a bad connection in the battery main B+ or b- wiring to the starter motor get the battery tested first

Won't Start

Check Neutral Safety Switch/Clutch Safety Switch.
A neutral or clutch safety switch is used to disengage the electrical circuit from the ignition key to the starter motor as a safety device. Automati transmission vehicle gear selector needs to be either in park or neutral before the engine will crank. If the gear selector is in any other gear sections the engine will not crank over. A standard transmission vehicle clutch peddle needs to be fully depressed before the engine will crank over. To test this circuit a automotive test light is needed. Attach one end of the test light to engine ground and the other end at the starter trigger terminal of the starter solenoid. The test light should illuminate when the ignition switch is activated (crank engine over). If the test light illuminates the starter motor/solenoid has failed and needs to be replaced. If the test light does not illuminate suspect a neutral safety switch or clutch safety switch. A wiring diagram is needed to trace power from the ignition switch through the safety switch and down to the starter solenoid. Replace failed components as needed and recheck system.

You still need to have the battery tested. The starter requires more current than anything else in the car. Once you have a known good battery, then you have to follow the wiring diagram to determine where the power is being lost. Test for power arriving on the small wire at the starter with the key held in start position. If power found, verify all cable connections first and then replace the starter. If no power on that wire, you will have to test the rest of the circuit.

Replaced starter except the wiring...i connected the ignition first and positive wire second. then connected the clip(black clip) made sure ignition went on first, positive wire second. Neither touching...

first you are going ot have ot check the wiring for any potential damage, this will entail you doing a continuity test and voltage test. you need to verify that you did not damage the wires in a way that will prevent them from delivering the charge to the starter. You will need to test the battery and make sure you did not damage any of the cells in the battery a simple voltage test with a multimeter will verify it is operating ( you will need between 11.8 and 12.6 volts) after you have made sure everything is in operating condition. Just as a side note you will want to be sure that all the fuses and relays are not damaged from the smoke out.
Once you have made sure all the wires and components are in good shape you will be able to repair the starter situation. When you try to reinstall the starter you will need to make sure that you are connecting the starter 'hot' (the battery positive) in the correct place on the starter, i imagine that you placed the battery hot on the wrong terminal of the starter and let the smoke out that way.

It not the battery its fully charged so what else ca it be ?

I just read the first post of the problem and i would say it sounds like you may have a bad starter, test the starter, you will need a testlight, you also said the battery tests good and is fully charged, the battery connections are good and tight . now move to the starter, at the rear of the starter you will find two wires. one is the size of a battery cable and should have power at all times, then on the other connection on the starter is a small wire, this is the wire you will need to test. you will need someone inside the car, have them crank and hold the key in the start postion while you test the small wire to see if it has power. if that wire has power with the key in the crank postion then the starter is bad, try tapping on the starter with a small hammer, tap lightly and sometimes that will cause the starter to make internal connection and start but also means the starter is bad. good luck and have a good day.

There may be several issues causing you problem. One is that you have a bad connection either on the battery or on the starter or even a bad battery cable. I would suggest removing the battery cables, If it's side post a 5/16 wrench or socket. If it's a top post then it's likely to be 7/16 or 10mm. Using a terminal brushf009f91.jpg clean both the negative and positive terminals. But before reconnecting them, inspect the cables from the battery to their respective connection points. (The starter and the block) Make sure they do not have any broken insulation or dark discolorations in the insulation which represents excessive heat and a weak spot in the cable. Also check and clean the connecting points. Using a socket to remove the ground cable, once removed use a stiff wire brush to clean the surface of the block, then reconnect to the block. Then move to the starter, Using a 5/16 remove the solenoid wires and a 1/2 or 9/16 to remove the battery cable from the starter. Again use a wire brush to clean both surfaces and check the cable ends (eyelets) for a good connection. then reinstall the cables.
I am not sure how they tested your starter, however I have seen several auto parts stores use a diagnostic load machine that checks the starting system without the removal of the starter. If this was the test performed this is not an accurate test for a starter. The Starter will need to be removed, taking the positive cable loose from the battery, then remove the battery cable from the starter with a 1/2 or 9/16 generally socket and a 5/16 generally for the solenoid wire. Once the wires are removed you will have two 9/16(generally) bolts that can be removed with a socket and ratchet. Once the bolts are removed the starter will already be wanting to come out. Remove the starter and take it in to a reputable Auto parts store and ask them to perform a load test. This load test will give you the exact amp draw of the starter and solenoid and then they can tell you if it exceeds the manufactures spec.

Starter wire problem

I assume the wire to the starters solenoid has no power going through it. A fuseable link is incorporated inside this wire inches away from the solenoid's connection. Some times wiggling it while someone holds the ignition ket to the starting position will tell you if the fuseable link has an open in it. The easiest way to check by yourself is to use an OHM meter to check the wire for continuity. If the meter reads OL by testing this wire from the solenoids connection and well more than a foot away, the link is no good. If you get a reading of 0000 or better the wire is fine. Then you have a faulty electrical ignition switch instead that needs to be replaced

Melting wires from my starter

You had a short circuit. You may have to replace all the wiring going to the starter and from the starter. Check the relays and as many wires as you can and see what can be repaired and what cannot.
