2003 chevy silverado stuck in reverse, and gearshift on column moving and loose

Drove fine and when I went to park it, gearshift just moved all over the place, wouldn't "lock in" and wasn't moving the truck into any other gear. I was able to put on parking brake and shut off engine, but now it won't start because it's in reverse. Truck was just worked on yesterday; rear differential and oil change. I called and they said it ran fine for them on test drive.

Drove fine all day yesterday without any problems. Never showed any symptoms of going out. This morning my wife went out to start it and proceeded to put it in reverse but tranny would not engage....

Usually this means the transmission is out of fluid. Check the fluid level, if its low add some fluid and see what that does. That's a good place to start.

You will need to look at the top of the trany and see if the linkage is moving or if the cable is moving to determine the problem, look under the dash while moving the shifter to see if the bracket under the dash thats bolted to column come loose, if it did not then look at trany to see if the linkage came apart at trany.

the linkage might have popped off the tranny must of those are on a ball socket, if you open the hood and find the cable that goes to the transmission. and you will most likly find that it popped off. if you have someone in the car when you are ready to pop it back on have them move the shifter until in the right spot and then push it back on. if it keeps poping off you will have to replace the cable.

You may have a loose shift linkage in the steering column. Remove the upper and lower plastic covers behind the steerong wheel (5 or 6 philips head) and see if you have any loose torx head or allen head screws. Ea
rlier models had this isue.
