SOURCE: how do you change the cv joint on a 1998 grand am

You can pick up an entire re manufactured axle assembly at your local auto parts store. In order to replace the assembly you will need to disconnect the tie rod end and the ball joint. Remove the spindle nut. Push the axle stub out of the hub. Now with a suitable container under the axle to catch spilled fluid pry the axle from the transmission housing. Install is the reverse of removal. For more detailed instructions and diagrams go to www.autozone.com vehicle repair guides.

How to change front u-joints on a 2001 ram 1500 4x4.

That model does not have U-joints, it uses constant velocity (CV) joints. It is much easier, and usually just as cost effective, to replace the half shafts (front axles that go from the differential to the wheels). Most parts stores don't even sell the CV units separately, and they are a lot more work to change.

We just bought a 2001 Ford Windstar and it makes a thinking noise in the front right, what could that be? I was told a u-joint but do they make that sound? I thought maybe a spring

Hello Ataya Mickelson,

I'm thinking... you meant ticking...??

Yes they (UNIVERSAL JOINTS) do...
but I pulled up your car on-line and IT APPEARS
you have CV-Joints
(on your "half shafts" (axle, each side)).

So do CV-joints (constant velocity joints) generally always start with a faint ticking... (if dry or hot even squeal) ... these sounds can get a LOT LOUDER ... and quite dangerous.

These joints might progress to grinding and even banging...
or simply FAIL and come completely apart (catastrophic).

Something that should NOT BE IGNORED
.

PARTS are not expensive (see below):

Thinking has always been one of my travails... problems & joys
(when done properly)... but regardless of how well or poorly I have done it... It has always been completely SILENT...
(I'm just saying).

Best regards... hope this helps!!

Probably best you take it to a good mechanic for a diagnosis, one dealing with steering /suspension/brakes /driveline.
It might be that something fails if you do not

When turning the front end makes a rubbing or vibration noise.

This is caused by incorrect & uneven front tire inflation OR a worn out CV joint( constant velocity joint) & this joint is the power transmitting shaft from the transmission to the tires. If it needs to be changed, you'll need to remove the lower ball joint & rim & tire & holddown nut to the CV joint. Hope this helps! Good luck!

What's involved in changing out cv joints on a 96 grand cherokee?

the joint is fairly easy to change. the hardest part is getting the hub assembly off. you will need a36mm sokcet for the hub nut.i had to use an 18" breaker bar to remove it.

Grinding noises when 4x4 is engaged

Most likely wheel bearing or cv joint issue. look for a ripped open cv boot. I believe that year used cv joints instead of regular u-joints. Hope I helped. Thanks
