2 buttons right in the middle of the center console just forward of the gear shifter between the L&R heated seat buttons. one button will put the top down, one will raise it.

Can't open the cover on my 1998 323i convertible top is down

some of the micro switches may have moved and lost contact
Lift the base of the rear seat and you will find a lever with a red tab on it
pull the lever forward and this will release the roof witch can then be operated manually you will have to take it to BMW to have it checked out and reinitialized

How does a manual top work on a 1998 BMW 323 I??

I believe you do this in this order. Roll windows down, release the latch at the top of the windshield, raise the front of the top, release rear cover by pulling the latch near the rear seat, Pull up the back of the top and then pull up on the rear cover. The back of the top should now fit into the opening under the rear cover. Continue to fold the top into this space. Push down on the rear cover to lock (won't be able to open trunk if not engaged.) To raise it, release rear latch cover, open rear cover and pull top out of opening. Raise rear of top so you are able to now close the rear cover, set rear of top down on cover and then pull fron of top down and engage the fraont latch. Hoe that helps.

I have a 1999 323i bmw and the convertable top doesnt work the light is blinking and i dont know how to check if the motors work what wires do i hook it up to and how can i test everything else

i had the same problem with my 1998 bmw 323i and right under the back drivers seat there is an emergency convertible top lever with a orange tip on it. i removed my back seat to make it easier. when you pull that lever, you will hear a bang sound. that is the sound of the motors disengaging.(there are 3 top motors in the trunk by the left side panel when you remove it) you will then have full access of movement to either put the top up or down. But before you do any of this, i Really suggest you watch this youtube video. if this link doesnt work, you can go to youtube.com and type in bmw convertible top motor stuck and click on the first link BMW DIY #3 E36 Top Repair. I suggest watching the whole video first before attempting or if you want, you can have a mechanic do it! hope this helps

Convertible cover for 98 bmw what is the part number or what is the proper name for the part that holds the covertible top down

How about "soft-top covering" 54318412054 in black.
Go to realoem.com and click :Enter"
Put in the info for your car (I guessed).
Find the section that has the part you want, "Folding Top Mounting Parts" for example.

My 1998 BMW 323ic top will not go down.

The linkage has probably come undone. You can disengage the rear motor by pulling on an orange tether that is under the right passenger seat. Once that's done you can manually put the top up and down and check the linkage.

BMW 328i 97 top will not go down , weird thumping sound

1st Scenario
The noise you are decribing can be from the driving gear from one of the electric motors could be worn down in which case you will have to get it replaced the best place to get a cheap second hand one is at a scrap yard.

2nd Scenario
If the trunk still wont open then the loose cable you are describing has snapped you will know witch cable because if the roof lid is open check for a button on one of the right lid catch which tells the car the roof lid is now closed and secure so the trunk is now allowd to open. If this is the case replace the cable.

To alastair bda if this does not solve your problem I have sent you an e-mail with further questions to investigate your noise problem. I will be waiting on your reply.
