1 Answer

1998 ford expedition 4x4 front wheels not engaging.

I checked the vacuum lign on the transfer case and the one that comes off of the front diff and both of them are plugged off and had no holes. i lubed the linkage under the black plastic cover and still nothing. after you select on the knob on the dash, the transfer case engages and the front driveshaft spins, but the front wheels are not turning. im out of ideas.

Front wheel drive does not engage from the transfer case

the hubs are vacuum actuated, make sure they are functioning properly, also check that the actuating motor on the transfer case is working.

My 2003 F-150 will not engage the 4-wheel drive when the switch is turned on? Two days ago it worked fine and the light does come on?

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

I am going to guess the drive shaft will not turn, and the problem is the shift disconnect motor on the front axle, or the shift solenoids.
The shift motor looks like this

The shift solenoids look like this :

You can check the shift solenoids with a vacuum gauge. The blue vacuum line is the 4WD operation, the pink is the 2WD operation. Pull the vacuum line at the shift disconnect motor, and install the vacuum gauge. Shift into 4WD and the vacuum should be on the line, and hold. If not could be the disconnect motor or the vacuum line to the motor.

Could also be the shift motor in the transfer case, but with the 4x4 light on the cluster lighting up, the transfer case should have shifted, the confirm comes from the transfer case to illuminate the 4x4 indicator on the cluster.

4wd doesn't work on my 98 Expedition

Put it on jack stands. Start it up, put it in 4x4. Put it in drive. Both front and rear drive shafts should be spinning. Do they?

2003 F-150 Supercew 4x4 won't egage

i had the same problem... even though i have an 04 heritage edition 4x4, manual shift lever, this should help you out... on the transfer case, there should be a plug just beside the forward drive shaft... even though mine is a manual shift, that plug lets the computer know that you are in 4wd... you also have a vacuum locking forward differential, the plug i referred to tells the computer to activate the vacuum system which engages the forward diff... i'm going to take my best guess that either the plug assembly on your transfer case might be bad, OR, you might have a bad vacuum module on your forward diff - even possibly a vacuum leak in the air lines coming from that assembly up to the firewall on the passenger side... just take a peak and see what you think, both the plug and vacuum assembly are easy fixes... (by the way, the vacuum module is a cylindrical unit that has an arm coming out of it that enters the diff... the module should be mounted directly onto your forward diff.)

My transfer case goes into gear but doesn't turn the wheels.

The lights can come on wihtout the transfer case really working..the lights are actvated by a simple switch and only indicate the switch has been depressed.

It's sounds as if you have a problem with the lickage, or maybe damage inside the transfer case itslef

05 Expidition will not lock the front wheels in 4x4

I had the same prob. on my 97 Expedition. Most likely if you have vacuum to both solenoids on the firewall (both must have vacuum) then it is probably the "actuator" located on the front differential. If you really want to check, put the truck up on jackstands-all four wheels. Put it into 4WD and take notice if the front driveshaft is spinning. If it is, its the actuator on the front diff. If not, probaby the transfer case and its associated hardware. Good luck.
