1995 olds 3.1 v6. ignition starting problem

This is happening to me 4 times and it's an intermittent problem. When trying to start the car from a cold start, I would think It was fixing to start and I'd turn the key back and it would make one back fire . If you try to start it again, it will but it just sputters and back fires and the engine revs up by it's self then shuts off. I've replaced both cam sensors and the computer control module. The entire car had a complete overall and tune up with top of engine being replaced and all new wires and spark plugs, everything you would replace during an major over haul. The only thing I haven't replaced is the ignition module and coil packs, but I don't know if they would have anything to do with the problem. I'm totally confused with this one. I connected he code fault finder and it shows no faults.

PS, it normally fixes it self if it sits for 4 days or so and it will run like new for months. Never happens while driving...only from a cold start.Never happens if you have been driving the car and you lets say stop to shop or whatever. Always happens in my driveway.

Thanks for any help
Dan

There are no fault codes. Timing and all was checked and set, It only backfires once every 3 or 4 months when I go to start the car and I don't hold the key in the start position long enough. When I turn the key back before it's running it back fires and then this whole thing begins. The lack of me not holding the key in the starting position long enough for it to start is what triggers this whole intermittent problem.

When you have a backfire on startup, normally means you need the timing adjusted. Normally this is not included in a basic Tune-up.

The ICM gets an impulse from the cam sensor(s) to let the coil know when to fire.

If there are no Check Engine Lights, Have the timing adjusted. If there are codes, please post them so we can further be of assistance.

How long has this been a problem? Did the problem exist prior to the overhaul?

The problem sounds like a faulty ignition module that is throwing your timing out of whack when its acting up. Although faulty ignition modules typically act up when they get hot (rather than yours acting up under cold start conditions), this isn't always the case.

The next time it exhibits problems, try gently tapping the module with the **** of a screwdriver and see if it changes the vehicle's behavior. If you have the capability, checking the timing can also help diagnose the problem. Or, you could take the module to a parts store and have it tested (AutoZone tests them for free). But keep in mind, being the problem is intermittent, it may test ok when its not.

Have you had the timing checked while it is exhibiting problems or just in general? If it is a faulty ignition module that is causing the issue, it will only be out of timing when the problem exists.

I turn the key and nothing happens. The lights do come on as normal and I had AAA check the battery. It's fine. Strange part is I can try to start it 3 times without success but in 2-3 minutes it will

It may be the starter relay or even the starter. I have had both happen on these cars. a less common problem would be the ignition switch. The starter relay is easy to replace, it is under the hood in the fuse box. Should be listed as starter relay.

1995 olds royale 88; fixed fuel pump, starts then shut it off and re start but nothing happens; sat over night, started right up three times in a row but the fourth not a chance; what's wrong?

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, key switch, or a list of other things.

Security light staying on 1995 olds cutlass

Go to good locksmith and make a copy of ignition key.Your keys must be badly worn and or resistor(antitheft)could be weak.Good locksmith can make you a new replacement at reasonable price. Also make sure you wipe ignition key if it gets wet.If it wont start wait 3 mins minimum before trying to restart.
Last resort would be changing ignition on column.
