  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Remove the engine undercover.
  2. Disconnect the clamp bolt from the power steering hose.
  3. Support the engine with the appropriate equipment and remove the engine mount bracket.
  4. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt procedure in this section.
  5. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the pump, if equipped.
  6. Remove the alternator brace.
NOTE The water pump bolts are different in size. Note their locations for installation.
  1. Remove the water pump, gasket and O-ring where the water inlet pipe joins the pump.
To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean both gasket surfaces of the water pump and block.
  2. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front end of the water inlet pipe. Do not apply oils or grease to the O-ring. Wet with water only.
  3. Using a new gasket, install the water pump assembly to the engine block. Torque the mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4. Connect the hoses to the pump.
  5. Install the timing belt. Refer to the timing belt procedure in this section.
  6. Install the engine drive belts.
  7. Fill the system with coolant.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens and fill the radiator completely.
  9. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

Just had replace timing belt now oil leak from cover, new seals water pump ? what went wrong

Sounds like the seal either did not get put on right or else it slipped during assembling the front cover back on. If you are concerned about where the leak is coming from you can put dye in the oil and check for a leak with a black light to make sure it is the timing cover leaking.

Water pump

You should not have to bleed a water pump. Fill the radiator till it overflows then start it up. The water pump will pump water into the water jackets. Let run for a short while then top up radiator.

96 Mitsubishi Magna steaming, temperature gauge normal

Hello there, Sorry to report that you probably need to replace the water pump. You should also replace the temperature sensor to get your guage operational again.
As for the difficulty in removing the pump, you could grab a haynes or chiltons manual at your local parts store for around $20 bucks or possibly sign one out at your local library for free (call ahead as they may not have one at that branch, but could get it shipped in from another library branch) - these will alleviate a lot of hassels in a step by step remove/ replace.. and has a lot of detail for many other issues/ maintenance..Please provide feedback for yoru solution
Best regards

Hi We have a 1997 mitsubishi magna with a 3.5 v6 engine. Is it a big job to change the water pump?the plastic cam belt covers seem to be a pain to get out, does the harmonic balancer need to be removed? i...

This job takes 4 to 6 hours for an experienced mechanic. The front of the engine has to be removed to access the timing belt. It is a job you can tackle, but you will need a manual to do it. If you plan to do it youself, buy a manual. there are critical timing procedures to follow. I recommend that when you do this or have it done, replace the pump and all the timing components. Because you only want to do this once.
