1993 dodge dakota air in brake lines not getting to wheel cylinder

We put new brakes on both rear left and right and new wheel cylinders and lines but still no fluid getting to lines

That is not possible, if you open the bleeder valves
& flush it thru & bleed in proper manner

Have to either bleed or remove & bypass the old rusted
hcu unit on left inside frame rail also.

If you remove it- unplug the module under dash
behind glove box

they should be 3/16" but if you want to be sure, take a quarter inch wrench and put the open end over the line if it is sloppy on the line it is 3/16" , if it fits nicely, it is 1/4" . that is the only two sizes they could of used.

not a hard job, but like all things you better know what your doing. Replacing the wheel cylinders is easy but then you need to bleed the brake system of air bubbles. There are plenty of sources for this so just do some research. I have found the brake system weak on my 2000 caravan, so I need to do some research on better components.

Bleed brakes


You start with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder. That would be the rear right wheel. Then the left rear wheel, the the front right, and finally the front left. Then repeat in same order order until you get no more air out of the lines.

Lock up when?

If you use the parking brake,then the cables
have to be replaced because of rust.

With proper brake maintenance once a year, there is no
reason to say they lock up while driving

How do I bleed brakes on a dodge stratus 1998


  • PRESSURE BLEEDING
  • MANUAL BLEEDING

    For vehicles equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), please refer to the ABS bleeding procedure at the end of this section.
    The purpose of bleeding the brakes is to expel air trapped in the hydraulic system. The system must be bled whenever the pedal feels spongy, indicating that compressible air has entered the system. It must also be bled whenever the system has been opened or repaired. If you are not using a pressure bleeder, you will need a helper for this job.

    WARNING Never reuse brake fluid which has been bled from the brake system.


    MASTER CYLINDER

    See Figure 1
    If the master cylinder is off the vehicle, it can be bench bled.

    1. Secure the master cylinder in a bench vise.
    2. Connect 2 short pieces of brake line to the outlet fittings, bend them until the free end is below the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoirs.
    3. Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 type brake fluid.
    4. Using a wooden dowel, or equivalent, pump the piston slowly several times until no more air bubbles appear in the reservoirs.

    1. Disconnect the 2 short lines, refill the master cylinder and securely install the cylinder cap.
    2. If the master cylinder is on the vehicle, it can still be bled, using a flare nut wrench.
    3. Open the brake lines slightly with the flare nut wrench, while pressure is applied to the brake pedal by a helper inside the vehicle.
    4. Be sure to tighten the line before the brake pedal is released.
    5. Repeat the process with both lines until no air bubbles come out.
    6. Bleed the complete brake system, if necessary.

    If the master cylinder has been thoroughly bled and filled to the proper level upon installation into the vehicle, it is not necessary to bleed the entire hydraulic system.


    PRESSURE BLEEDING

    When bleeding the brakes, air may be trapped in the brake lines or valves far upstream, as much as 10 feet from the bleeder screw. Therefore, it is very important to have a fast flow of a large volume of brake fluid when bleeding the brakes, to make sure all of the air is expelled from the system.
    On Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible and Breeze models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:


    Left rear wheel Right front wheel Right rear wheel Left front wheel
    On Sebring coupe and Avenger models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:


    Right rear wheel Left front wheel Left rear wheel Right front wheel

    1. You should use bleeder tank tool C-3496-B or equivalent, with the required adapter for the master cylinder reservoir to pressurize the hydraulic system for bleeding. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for using a pressure bleeder.
    2. Attach a clear plastic hose to the bleeder screw located at the right rear wheel, then place the hose into a clean jar that has enough fresh brake fluid to submerge the end of the hose.
    3. Open the bleeder screw at least one full turn or more to get a steady stream of fluid.
    4. After about 4-8 oz. of fluid has been bled through the brake system and an air-free flow is maintained in the hose and jar, close the bleeder screw.
    5. Repeat the procedure at all the other remaining bleeder screws. Then, check the pedal for travel. If pedal travel is excessive or has not improved, enough fluid has not passed through the system to expel all of the trapped air. Be sure to monitor the fluid level in the pressure bleeder. It must stay at the proper level so air will not be allowed to re-enter the brake system through the master cylinder reservoir.
    6. Once the bleeding procedure is complete, remove the pressure bleeding equipment from the master cylinder.


    MANUAL BLEEDING

    See Figure 2
    Proper manual bleeding of the hydraulic brake system will require the use of an assistant.
    On Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible and Breeze models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:

    2. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal 3-4 times, and hold it down before the bleeder screw is opened.
    3. Open the bleeder screw at least one full turn. When the bleeder screw opens, the brake pedal will drop.
    4. Close the bleeder screw. Release the brake pedal only AFTER the bleeder screw is closed.
    5. Repeat the procedure 4 or 5 times at each bleeder screw, then check the pedal for travel. If the pedal travel is not excessive, or has not been improved, enough fluid has not passed through the system to expel all of the trapped air. Make sure to watch the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. It must stay at the proper level so air will not re-enter the brake system.
    6. Test drive the vehicle to be sure the brakes are operating correctly and that the pedal is solid.

    I just replaced my master cylinder on my 1994 ford thunderbird LX with a 4.6L V8. But my brake pedal is still going down to the floor board. What could be the cause of that?


    you've bled the lines from back to front, and bled the master cylinder/ It sounds like air in the lines, so you should be able to get streams of fluid with no air at all bleeder screws-start from the furthest away from the master cylinder, to the closest, then do the master cylinder. If that doesn't work, you must have a broken line or a leaking caliper or wheel cylinder.

    use a flare wrench and remove the two brake lines
    then remove the the two nuts that hold it to the fire wall
    then remove.
    then remove the master cylinder reservoir because your
    going to have to put it on the new one
    drain out any brake fluid from it
    in stall the reservoir on the new master cylinder
    now you'll have to prime the new master cylinder
    put the master cylinder in a vise and put brake fluid into it
    now place your fingers over the two holes that the brake line go into
    use a large phillips screw driver and push the piston in and out about 10 times
    but do it slowly. make shore to keep your fingers over the brake line holes .
    now install it back in
    remember to bleed your brake system when your done

    How to bleed brakes on 2002 toyota sienna


    Here is the procedure from the service manual. I would add just one thing. Do each wheel in this order

    1. right rear wheel
    2. left rear wheel
    3. right front wheel
    4. left front wheel
    BLEEDING

    HINT: If any work is done on the brake system or if air in the brake lines is suspected, bleed the air from the system.

    NOTICE: Do not let brake fluid remain on a painted surface. Wash it off immediately.


    a)FILL BRAKE RESERVOIR WITH BRAKE FLUID Fluid:SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT3

    b)BLEED MASTER CYLINDER HINT: If the master cylinder has been disassembled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the air from the master cylinder.

    c)Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder. SST 09023-00100 Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it.

    Block off the outlet plug with your finger and release the brake pedal.
    Repeat (b) and (c) 3 or 4 times.


    BLEED BRAKE LINE

    1. Connect the vinyl tube to the caliper or wheel cylinder bleeder plug.
    2. Depress the brake pedal several times, then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal held down.
    3. At the point when fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug, then release the brake pedal. Torque: (Bleeder plug) Front brake caliper
    : 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.) Rear wheel cylinder: 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.)
    4. Repeat (b) and (c) until all the air in the fluid has been bled out.
    5. Repeat the above procedure to bleed the air out of the brake line for each wheel.

    CHECK FLUID LEVEL IN RESERVOIR Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary. Fluid: SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT3

    you mean parking brake cable? loosen parking brake cables put drums on , and adjust shoes till they lightly drag, now apply brakes a few times and check the adjustment again, if all ok, now adjust park brake cables, you want to adjust so park pedal goes 5-8 clicks till the wheels are "locked up" and the wheels spin free with the park brake off

    Got answer to my question about air in brakes but how do you bleed the master cylinder?


    to bleed the brake line somebody as to pump the brake pedal
    3 to 4 times and somebody opens the bleeder on the brake caliper

    starting by the right rear wheel, then the left rear wheel, then front right wheel anf finishing with the front left wheel bleeder.

    to bleed the master cylinder is the same principle pump pedal 3,4 times
    but this time open the line at the master cylinder starting with the rear hoses

    HOW TO CHANGE REAR WHELL CYCLINDERS ON 2001 DODGE


    remove rear wheel remove brake drum remove brake line from wheel cyl.remove least amount of tension springs and shoe assembally as possible then remove the 2 bolts that hold the cyl in place the bolts are on each side of brake line.then follow directions in reverse to install new one.hint if you're not really used to doing drum brakes ONLY TEAR DOWN 1 SIDE AT A TIME INCASE YOU FORGET WHICH WAY SOME OF THE SPRINGS OR CABLE GOES BACK YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER SIDE TO LOOK AT FOR A GUIDE.when you have them back on you'll need to bleed all air from the system. hope i helped.

    How do I replace master cylinder myself on 1993 Dodge Cummins


    Remove the old master cylinder. Use line wrenches to avoid damage to the brake line fittings. Bench bleed the the new master cylinder you have purchased. The parts store will tell you how to accomplish this and sell you the necessary bleed kit (note it may be included with the master cyl.). Carefully install the new master cylinder. Reconnect the brake lines and do not over tighten. Now with a helper, bleed the brake system. Start at the Right Rear wheel. Find the bleeder located on the back side of the wheel at the wheel cylinder. It should have a small rubber cap. Remove the cap and using a boxed in wrench, loosen the bleeder valve slightly while your helper is applying steady pressure to the brake pedal. The pedal will go to the floor and you will see and hear air bubbles come for the bleeder. Tighten the valve and then tell the helper to release the brake pedal and do it all over again. Keep doing this until no air appears. Periodically check the master cylinder and do not allow the fluid level to get too low as it will **** more air into the system. Remind you helper to never release the brake pedal until you give the OK. If he releases the pedal while the valve is open, air will be drawn into the system. Now after bleeding the RR wheel, move to the LR, then RF, and finish with the LF.
