Question about 2004 Ford Freestar

Is there a check valve or some kind of electronic valve to allow hot water to circulate through the heater cores, both front and rear? i have no heat anywere. i have flushed and replaced the thermostat. this is a 2004 ford freestar van. it just stop all at once, seems i am not getting circulation thru either core.

Fords have a door blend actuator most of the time in one of the front doors if this malfunctions it will not give any heat

    I second Rene's comment. My blend door was actually thumping, sounded like a bass drum beating. The blend door motor/actuator had a broken worm gear inside that wouldn't let it move the door full range. The blend door is in the AC plenum located behind the dash and I believe the motor is on the outside of the plenum? In the older days the heat/cold door was moved by a steel cable via a lever on the dash but automakers decided to go electronic which makes auto climate control easy. I had the dealer replace it since it was a fleet vehicle and not my own.

My 99 windstar did this too. It was the blend door that the actuator motor goes into was broke. When you pull the actuator out look into the hole and see if you see a d shape piece coming out of the box if it is not d shape it is broke check out this site great photos

You just might have an air lock. Try bleeding the system from the heater hose at the firewall. Losen one hose a little, and at operating temp. open slightly to let air out. You will lose some coolant, but just refill the rad. Now, both hoses should get hot.

I don't know your vehicle, but does it have a blower door tucked in where the heater core is? If it DOES and that's broken then it could be the whole problem. It would mean it isn't switching from the A/C side of things to the heat side of them. Hope this helps, good luck! Also, just looked up the proper name for what I'm talking about, it's called a "blend door" and I think your car has one. It's what I would check, again, good luck!

Is the blower motor working? If not that is what it is. If it is working then check heater coil out, Could be bad heater coil.

Why is my heater blowing cold


Most likely it is the heater control valve that shifts air from blowing across your heater core to your air conditioner core.

If your fan works and your car is fairly new..meaning your heater core isn't dirty and full of craap...then it is the climate cotrol valve.
If you are lucky, it might be a thermostat that is bad and blocking hot water from entering your heater core. Bottom line, if hot water doesn't circulate thru that little heater core, you won't get heat.
You might be able to look under the hood and grab the hot water lines that go thru the firewall and feed your heater core. If they feel cold to the touch after engine has warmed up, then you aren't getting circulating water to the heater core. If they feel nice and warm, then the heater core is fine, but your climate control valve has closed off the fan that blows across the core to disperse heat into the cabin

your heater core is not circulating..this could be because you have air trapped in your coolant system or your heater switch is not opening the valve to allow flow through your core. the front core is located higher than the radiator...so its hard to purge any air that gets trapped in it. personally...I installed a purge valve so I can expel any air from the higher parts of the cooling system....because I also had the same problem with my 2000 premier. but first try to purge your system of any air pockets by turning on your heater.....fan on high......let the vehicle warm up....add some distilled water or dexcool to your coolant tank.....rev engine to 2500rpm for a brief moment.....let idle for a moment and repeat 5 or six times....make sure to turn on the rear heater too at full fan when you do this. if this doesn't help....read up on your vehicle by means of chilton or other published repair manuals ...then check the engine heater switch for proper vacuum and electrical supply when your console control is on for heat (heater switches on the engine - located over each of the valve covers-one for front-one for back-with metallic tubing into side and out of bottom).....be careful...the heater switch on the engine will be very hot!! check relay in fuse box...check fuse in fuse box....check switch and vacuum supply to console control unit.....good luck and be careful....

Are both heater hoses hot when the heater is on? Look for the water control valve to see if it's letting water into the heater core. The core could be plugged too.

Heater will not blow out hot air in my 1988 ford F250. Thermostat and hoses are all good. Is there a sensor that may be causing the problem and where is it located?


Hello! There isn't a sensor that would disallow heated water to circulate through the heater core...If the temperature gauge rises to normal...And the upper radiator hose is hot along with the lower hose ...I can conclude water is circulating through the block...Question then becomes; Is it circulating through the heater core? And the answer to that is, I don't think so...With the heater control turned on high feel the outlet heater core hose (facing engine it's the one on the left) if it feels cold or not as hot as the inlet then one of two items are at fault...#1...The Plenum assembly, which the heater core sets in has an open vacuum line...#2...The heat control valve cable or the valve itself is not opening...See picture of valve below...It is on the firewall...Let me know if heat is passing through the heater core...If hot water isn't passing through the core and the valve is opening than the core itself is blocked...send a comment...Guru...Saailer

most likely a problem with the water circulation around the heater core. if you've never used the heater, some vehicles have a hot water shut-off valve for the heater hoses. another possibility is the thermostat had been removed. the easiest way is to start the vehicle and slowly allow it to warm up monitoring the water temperature. it should heat up to normal water temperature, then heat up and then drop down. the thermostat is usually around 180 degrees or 192 degrees. it allows the water around the engine block to heat up then once it reaches 180 or whatever it opens up circulating the cooler water from the radiator into the engine block and pushing the hotter water into the radiator to cool off. no thermostat, then the water keeps constantly circulating not allowing it to properly heat up. this can slow the heater down, lower fuel economy, alot of things especially in the winter driving...

I have changed the theromast twice and flushed the coolant system.The heater core is not leaking.. the blower is still blowing cool air.


The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.

if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.

Check the 'heater control valve'. This valve opens when u turn on the heat switch on the dash, so the hot coolant will flow thru the heater core and provide heat. So although the coolant is circulating in the engine, the valve controlling the flow to the heater core is stuck closed, or not working.
