1999 Gmc Sierra not charging

My Sierra doesn't charge the battery when its cold. If its above about thirty outside its fine. Any colder,15 to 20, then it doesn't charge until the truck warms up. It charges fine once the truck is warmed up.

Hello;
Sounds like the alternator/regulator assembly is getting weak. The cold wreaks havoc with electrical equipment. Probably need to replace it prior to failure. Hope this helps.
Thanks;

You may need a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams and test procedures.
The alternator output should be around 14 volts unless you have a heavy load such as headlights or the heater blower on high.
If voltage goes above 14 the regulator could be faulty even tho you say the alternator checked out ok on a bench test.
The regulator gets a power signal from the gauge on the dash to energize it. There could be a loose connection somewhere in the charging system, or something in the instrument cluster. Even the key switch could be a factor.

You can get the battery load tested at just about any parts store. I would have this done. If it checks out good, get the charging system tested, and if that is good, you could possibly have a draw draining your battery when it's not running.

2006 GMC Sierra electrical problem

If your Sierra has a Duramax, it may be the intake air heater or the fuel heater cycling on and off in the cold weather. But if its pulling the voltage down to 12V after warmup, I would suspect a poor battery. As suggested, get a load test at autozone or ??

This sounds like a weak battery. The lights, horn, etc., are all very small loads. The starter is the hardest item for your battery to push. You can take the battery to an auto parts store and they can perform a "load check". If it shows weak, then let them put the battery in for you. The reason it is harder to start in the morning is, it is the longest time since the battery has been charged, and it is usually cooler in the morning. Batteries hate the cold.
