Question about 1993 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

I have a 1993 corolla that just received a new distributor. After the distributor was installed ($460) the car stutters and the check engine light blinks. We took it back to the shop and the mechanic

The car never had a stuttering problem before the distributor was replaced. Neither shop we went to had the computer plugs for a 93 so we are paying them to guess.

Thanks Peter. I took it to a Toyota dealership here in Athens. They identified the problem as a faulty distributor. Turns out the supplier of my mechanic sent us 3 refurbished distributors, all with problems. However, the supplier sent us a brand new distributor and the car is still having the same misfire problems on all four cylinders...So...The mechanic agreed to reimburse me and I am either going to donate the car and write it off on my taxes or try and see if I can't get $750 for it.

I think you can take up to $500 off your Federal Return. I donated my old dakota to the veterans & did that for 2010

Your saying neither shop had the older OBD1 Scan Tool
or software at their shops !!

No reason for that, still have to work on older vehicles

Guessing at what? May very well be guessing & wishing
they never took in the job

How did they determine you needed a new distributor?
That probably was a no testing & guess situation

Get it to another shop that has been in business for 30 years
with the same owner & ASE Certified people

Testimonial: "I took it to a Toyota dealership and they were able to diagnose the problem as a distributor ignition problem. I took it back to the mechanic and he put a brand new distributor in and it still had the same problems. I'm going to see how much we can get for it. My folks have an old car that nobody is using right now and said it was available for us to use. Do you know anyone who needs a project or parts car?"

This is what you need to do, change the plug wires, because if there is a bad wire you would definitely experiences sputter or a stutter, so do the plug wires and at the same time do the spark plugs, this should take care of your problem. if not let me know and i will give you the next step

Remove the distributor cap and check for water inside it. Ignition wires may have gotten wet as well and possibly need to be replaced

Plymouth acclaim 1993 stuters while driving. Also, there is a whirring sound coming from engine

Check the air filter!
Make sure the noise is coming from the engine, not the trans (is the noise also appearing when you rev it up in Park?)!
Is it the 6 or 4 cylinder engine?
How old are the spark plugs and cables? Take the distributor cap off and check for the finger having a good contact. Maybe it's worn out?
Check the fuel and fuel line. Is the stuttering appearing since you refueled? Maybe you got bad fuel...
Last but not least exchange the fuel filter (or have it exchanged by a shop). Autozone.com has some pretty good how-to manuals about all this.

Help how?

We have no vehicle to perform any testing on !!

If you changed a distributor, you have to know before
hand the procedure or problems on the install & how to
set it up.

You can't work on any vehicle blind without reference material

I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla that just got a new distributor. After the distributor was installed by a shop, the car stutters and almost stalls out and then goes back to normal for a little while. Then...

My crystal ball is a bit foggy and there is no history on your issues.
I would take it back and ask for my money back then take it to a Toyota Dealer.

No start, blown ignition fuse 30 amp.

If it is the AM2 (30A) fuse that is blowing, check the ignition condenser, capacitor, within the ignition assembly. I just removed it and assembled the ignition back together. I am in the process of ordering a new one from Rock Auto for a total of $2.57. It seems to be a common issue. The condenser is actually a capacitor and the issue is that they internally short.
