You may have bad teeth on your starter or the solenoid may just be going bad. It is also possible you bought a defective battery, may have bad cells.

There is a tube on the drivers side of the carb. facing the front of the engine. It only draws vacuum when you are giving it the gas. Is it a quadrajet? Get one from a 1970-1974 these are simple to operate.

several things to check out:
get it started and go have the battery, alternator, and voltage regulator tested. No charge at most parts stores.
IF they all test ok then you will need to remove the starter and have it tested. The solenoid could be bad. Was it wet outside the day it wouldnt start? if so then oisture is probably getting into the solenoid.
