Why is my 1998 buick regal not shifting into drive?

My car will not shift into drive unless i start off in 1st or 2nd an when i get it up to 30mph it will shift into drive. What can be the problem? Transmission shop told me had to replace tranny for 1700.00.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Check to see if the kickdown cable became detached.......or go to most any autoparts stores and they will let you use their code readers free of charge if used there....it could be a sensor cause buick has alot of them and are known for their sensors going out

Hi,

Here is some possible reasons why your transmission is having those problems .

* The gear shift linkage is binding
* There is an internal problem in the transmission
* The throttle cable is broken or disconnected
* The vacuum modulator on the transmission is faulty or the vacuum line is damaged
* The electronic transmission control circuit may be faulty

SOURCE: 2003 BUICK REGAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEM.

This is a common problem on some GM cars. There is a pressure control valve in the side cover of the transmission that needs to be replaced. The transmission does not have to be rebuilt. You will need to get a side cover gasket also.

What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.

run fault codes and check for TCM operation. Change the oil and clean the filter. Have the bands and clutch packs adjustment checked while the pan is off.

On my 1998 buick regal GS the perf shift light has turned on what is that?

Should be a button on the side of the shifter - push it and the light would go off.
It is how you change from regular to performance shifting.

He put it in D or R and it still in Neutral, raving the engine doesn't help. After several tries, and usually like ~5 minute warmup if finally gets in D and then the car drives perfectly fine. It only...

First doublecheck your transmission fluid level. Its the red handled dipstick near the back of the motor. You check trans fluid level WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING. If that is ok, you might be getting towards the end of that trannys life. My mother had a bonninville, for the last 2 years we had to drop it down to 1st (the 1 on the gear shift) then into drive. This worked for a couple years before it finally blew out. Try going from 1st then into "D" and make sure it shifts, You can always shift it manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to drive if needed. Aint gunna hurt anything, just dont go over 3-4 on you tachometer. You dont wanna redline it.

Goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown

It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell
