If you are talking about the temp gauge on the dash, the gauges get power from the same source. If the gas gauge works, the problem could be the temp sensor on the engine block.

Need help please my 2007 kia spectra fan stopped. I checked all fuses and all appear good. Any ideas

electronic coolant fans (radiator) are controlled by a temperature sensor in the cooling system. It in turns energizers a circuit in the ECM that activates a relay to allow power to the fan. To check the system you have to check that the relay is getting power from the ECM, that the sensor is actually operational and that both fuses are ok. Remember that the fan will not operate unless the coolant temperature is nearing the thermostat opening temperature (from 75 degrees F upwards)

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Cooling fan does not run?

At the main fuse and relay box, check the 30A EGI INJ fuse. If OK, the main relay closes to apply power to the cooling fan relay. Next, check the 30A FAN 1 and FAN 2 fuses. If OK, power is being applied to the fan control module. The PCM processes engine coolant temperature sensor input and sends a signal to the fan control module which, in turn, causes the cooling fan motor to operate. Fan failure could be caused by malfunction of the cooling fan relay, the fan control module, the engine coolant temperature sensor, the cooling fan motor itself, or the PCM

Radiator fans not working on a 99 dodge Grand Caravan

Hi there:
The engine coolant temperature sensor is a variable resistor with a range of -40 degrees F-265 degrees F (-5 degrees C-129 degrees C).

The engine coolant temperature sensor provides an input voltage to the PCM. As the coolant temperature varies, the sensor resistance changes resulting in a different input voltage to the PCM.

When the engine is cold, the PCM will demand slightly richer air/fuel mixtures and higher idle speeds until normal operating temperatures are reached.

The engine coolant temperature sensor is also utilized for control of the cooling fan.

7_19_2012_5_08_13_pm.gif

Fig. 1: Engine coolant temperature sensor location - 3.3L and 3.8L engines

Check this test procedure:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Detach the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  3. Using a DVOM set to the ohms scale, connect one lead to terminal A and the other lead to terminal B of the coolant temperature sensor connector.
  1. With the engine at normal operating temperature, approximaterly 200 degrees F (93 degrees C), the ohmmeter should read approximately 700-1000 ohms.
  2. With the engine at room temperature, approximately 70 degrees F (21 degrees C), the ohmmeter should read approximately 7000-13,000 ohms.
  3. If not within specifications, replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.
  4. Test the resistance of the wiring harness between PCM terminal 26 and the sensor wiring harness connector. Also check for continuity between PCM connector terminal 43 and the sensor wiring harness connector. If the resistance measures greater than 1 ohm, repair the wiring harness as necessary.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Overheating at idle but fan works when a/c is on

The A/C is linked to the fan and that is why the always comes on when you switch on the A/C.
There is also a temperature sensor/relay that monitors the engine water temperature and turns on the fan when the water temperature is hot.
This temperature and relay maybe faulty. Check the fuse that controls the fan, if it is OK then the temperature sensor or relay is faulty.

We have a 2004 X5 diesel , fan won't turn off even after key removed, have taken out 50amp fuse to stop it ! would apreciate a solution please

In these models the temperature control works till the normal temperature comes to the engine. So if there is failure of the temperature control sensors- Thermistor- or if there is fault on the temperature controller unit , the fan will be made to work on till the controller deactivates.
So you need to check for the input- temperature sensor, check any wires that had come off the sensor or the unit, check if the fan control contactor/relay has failed or jammed on contact.( relay).
Try and trace these lines , check the action of the relay when the fuse is put on, if you hear the relay clicking then it works and the control circuit can be the suspect.

My radiator fans are not coming own.

If the fans don't engage after the engine reaches normal operating temperature start the diagnosis by checking the fuse 16 under the dash, and fuse 4 under the hood. If those are good test the coolant temperature sensor by checking the resistance across the two sensor terminals. If the coolant temperature is 50 degrees F then the resistance should be about 5670 ohms the resistance increases at cooler temps and decreases at higher temps. If the sensor is good then have the fan relays tested. Since both fans don't appear to be working the fans are probably ok.
