Question about 2008 Hyundai Sonata
Check engine light goes on car has 65,000 miles on it, was told engine has sludge in it Why? it's only 4yrs old we do reg oil changes. Is there a prob with the 2008 sonata engines
I doubt you have sludge in your engine since oil has detergent in it to prevent this. I would stay away from this dealer.

Umm.. no. There was a recall years ago for the brake lamp switch as the old style failed very easily. Check your nearest dealer on this.
Robert Cole.. There is little if any detergent in modern oils. Sludging is a problem with not frequent enough oil changes (absolute minimum 7,500 miles), or inferior oil filter. It is known that aftermarket (inferior) oil filters can (and will) cause sludge buildup in the engine.
Willin678.. No this is another issue, totally unrelated to sludge or the engine in general. There was a shift issue that was/is resolved with a sensor and harness replacement in the transmission, but that has nothing to do with sludge in an engine.
OP.. No, there is not a problem with the sonata engine. See my above comments. I wish you luck and recommend you go to another dealer and see if you get the same recommendation. If so I would suggest the offered de-sludge service and use a hyundai oil filter and for the next 15k miles do oil and filter changes every 3,000 miles.

I had same problem and my repair shop just replaced a sensor in the tranny. Said it was a defect by Hyundai, but they won't recall it.

hyundai bumper to bumper warranty is 5yrs 60k miles with 100k powertrain for original owner. unless you have an extended warranty it is not covered. there is actually a tsb for adjustment on the brake lamp switch
