If the belt driving it is not squeeling and the reservoir is up to the full mark, the power steering pump needs to be replaced.

What happens if the drive belt breaks

if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation

Noise while driving and turning. How to tell if the power steering pump is starting to fail?

power steering pumps can be noisey for years without actually failing but in saying that, the longer you let the pump whine the more metal will be going into your rack causeing premature rack replacing. if the level is ok and it whines then the pumps on its way out

My 56 ford focus 1600 zetec is making an awful noise when even slightly turning the steering wheel in either direction, does this mean my power steering has had it????

Hi

No most likely the power steering needs a new belt, when they loosen off or start to decay they squel lodly, ofetn they can be tightened up but for the cost involved just buy a new one. if the steering still feels like it is working correctly but just noisey then most likely it is fine and it will just be the belt.

on a car this year the power steering rack and pump should last another few years yet.

Hope this helps, p.s a garage will not charge much to fix this.
Regards

Dan
