good morning to all, i have a question for stephen who responded to my original question. how do you change the horn contact pads?

The horn contacts should be part of the air bag which is a dealer part. I would check with the dealer to see if the contacts are available separate.

Sounds like the contacts in the horn pad are faulty.
Normally you ground the horn relay when you press the horn pad.

SOURCE: my horn on a 99 grand am doesnt work

hi,

push the horn button when its quiet at night and see if you can hear a tiny click from under the dash. If you hear a click then it may be the horn under the hood is faulty. if no click, make sure all your fuses are good. If your handy you can trace that horn wire coming out of the column. you may need a chilton or haynes book for the wire diagram. I dont recommend disassambling the wheel because of the airbag, so try and get access to the wire by undoing the collar around the column or under the dash. you should be able to just ground the the horn wire and it should sound. shouldnt have to connect the horn wire to any other wire, just to ground, check haynes manualcarefully, always keep one battery cable slightly loose when doing work like that. If all else fails go and get an air horn replacement kit for it with its own wiring and switch. they are cool anyways and make pedestrians and bicyclists move quicker than what they normally would... LOL

Under your hood there is a box that looks like a fuse box. It contains relays. Replace the one marked horn.

Just be very careful when removing the airbag - disconnect the battery and short the circuit before touching the connectors.
Your second problem is caused by a failure of the relay - replace it

Pontiac grand am gt '99 horn doesn't work

If you bought the car at a dealership, all saftey related problems should have been repaired before the vehicle is sold, at least thats the law in Canada, If your air bag light is not on, the air bag should work correctly, the air bag module is the center of the steering wheel where the air bag is contained, usually the horn circuit is seprate from this module and is more common for a clock spring contact to cause you issue. The clock spring is the contact point to allow the steering wheel to turn and yet keep contact with all the other steering wheel controls

I bought a 2004 chevy malibu and the horn doesnt work. By the end of the month I need to get one put in for Inspection. How do I get into my steering wheel to change out the horn?

There are three parts, the switch in the steering wheel, generally the center padded switch can be removed with screws that go in through the back, search for chevy horn switch on youtube and most likely you can watch someone do it. sometimes the center horn switch part just snaps out instead of screws.

there is a horn relay stuck in one of the fuse panels. these can be located by looking in your owners manual. there will be a map or legend of what is what, and there is also usually one in the cover of the fuse panel itself. it's a cheap plug-in unit

then you can also find the horn itself which is generally in front of and to the side the radiator, but behind the grill. you can unplug its connector and jumper the battery right to it. if it honks then your problem is the switch or the relay, if it does not honk then you need another horn. these can be had at parts stores and junk yards all over. the nice thing about a junk yard horn is that it will already have the GM mounting bracket on it so you do not have to fabricate anything.

it turns on on certain position of the steering wheel? if yes, then the problem is clock spring under the horn pad. you need to change it if it is electronics.

Went to get van inspected and was told horn did not work-3500 van

On your truck you should have a high note and low note horn. One is on the left of the radiator support at the bottom, the other on the right of the radiator support at the bottom.

You can do it.
