Just pop the distributor cap and have someone crank the engine while you watch the rotor.

How I can determine which hole in the distributor is assigned to the #1 plug wire.
Pull the number one plug. Turn the engine over slowly (with a wrench) while holding your finger over the plug hole. When the air builds (a lot of) pressure you are coming up to the number one spot on the distributor. (the rotor will point to the location of the #1 hole in the distributor.)

Quick methods to disable the engine I have seen people do on the classics:
Close the points by loosening the set screw
Pull the rotor cap
Connect a wire from the coil to ground. (effectively closes the points. Can damage the coil if key is left on.)
Pull the main ignition wire
And there are some tricks at the starter solonoid involving the ballast resistor bypass that is used to provide a hotter spark while cranking. (Two little wires at the starter solonoid - one is crank the other is the ballast bypass.)

Might give those a look-see. Best of luck (rememeber rated this help).

Setting valve clearances

360 with hydraulic lifters, the crankshaft wit a ratchet and socket to get each valve closed. When lifter is at bottom turn the valve adjuster out to where you have free movement then turn adjuster till the rocker arm touches the lifter, then turn the adjuster in three quarters of a turn, and that valve is adjusted. No other clearance is required on hydraulic lifters. Do this with each valve in turn as each piston comes to top dead center using the firing order as a guide. When #1 piston is up to top dead center, both valves are closed. Adjust intake and exhaust at this time. Then the next in the firing order. The firing order can be found on the intake as is each cylinder marked with it's number. If it were a Chevy small block, for example only, firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. I would bring # 1 cylinder up to top dead center on compression stroke by removing that spark plug and stick my finger in the hole and crank the engine till I felt my finger being pushed away with compression, then bring that piston up till the timing mark was on the "0" of the timing tab at drivers side of the harmonic balancer on the crank. Adjust both valves on #1 cylinder and then turn the crank until both valves of #8 cylinder were free moving at the rocker. Then to the next in order of fire. I would turn each adjuster out at least one full turn before starting this procedure, then adjust them in order of firing starting with #1. It isn't hard, just takes time to do it right.

Amc manuals 1977

You can acquire this manual from most any PepBoys store. If you'd rather, just type in your google box "1977 AMC firing order".
Naturally you'd put the engine size,6 or 8 cylinder with displacement, right after AMC in your typing. When you click the search button it will show you your firing order. Google is your friend.

Is this the same order as a 1988 model f 150 6 cylinder?

Same firing order, you mean? Yep, same one, that old 300 straight six survived a lot of years and modifications. When Ford finally got it right, then they quit using it, sometime in the '90's.
The best 6 cylinder engine from American car makers was the old 256 cu. in. International engine. AMC (American Motors Corp.) put it in cars in the '70's, best known perhaps, is the Eagle station wagon 4WD had this engine all during the '80's. When Chrysler bought up AMC and Jeep, they took this 256 and modified it over and over, and morphed it into the 4.0 L engine (now at 242 c.i.) found in Jeeps from about '88, and all during the '90's. While good and sturdy, it took Chrysler until 1996 before they had the good smooth idle that made the 256 stand out. I'm no expert on this, just very opinionated !

Might have plug wire out of place amc 1983 258 eale

It is not possible to have just one wire out of place. If you have reversed two wires the engine will run terribly (if at all). Likely back-fire, almost no power.

Cylinder order

The firing order on all four cylinder engines is 1.3.4.2. and number one cylinder is at the opposite end of the engine to the gearbox, at the end with the belts and pulleys.
