The po301 is a misfire code. The backfire can be caused by a excessive amount of fuel, bad valve timing etc.
My guess is you have damage to an exhaust valve that may have occurred when you had the timing belt problem.A compression test will indicate if you have a leaking exhaust valve. The reason for the backfire is the exhaust valve is still partially open when the spark plug fires.

If you have spark, try changing the fuel filter. If you don't have spark, get back to me.

check if the fuel pump is working, if you have someone near the tank and someone else crank motor you should be able to hear a bzzzzzz rom the tank from the pump. if no noise is heard then hit or thump the tank, this can make a fuel pump start to work again, if it starts, then the pump is almost dead

Backfires exhaust

If it is back firing through the exhaust, it is not running good because you are putting unburned fuel into the exhaust, bad spark plug or leaking exhaust valve, you need a compression test to start, you may as well change the spark plugs while they are out

I have 150 to 160 psi on 3 cyclinder and 110 to 120 on 1 cyclinder what does that mean

Remove spark plugs from low cylinder put a small amount of engine oil in the cylinder replace plug and do another compression test if the pressure. Increases its probably a worn bore or piston rings if the reading does not rise then it's probably head gasket or a valve not seating properly

I have a 1997 mit mirage when i try to start it, it wants to back fire and not start and when it does start it pops and has no power and wants to die because of low idle

Its possible that last injector is the problem.
Someone will need to check out the fuel system - check fuel pressure and the injectors among other things.
I am assuming the check engine light is not on.
I'm also assuming the timing belt, distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires are in good condition.

Fuel going to carb, fuel pump working, no prob with fuel filter, enginge cranks over, but backfireing, enginge doesnt start. Have put starter fluid in carb, makes worse. i beliveve i have fire on points,...

I believe this is a fuel injected engine, not a carburetor engine.

Having said that, given what you've already checked and believe to be OK, I'd take a look at timing if I were you.

Could be a timing chain has either loosened or broken, allowing camshaft to get out of time relative to crankshaft. This could cause the backfire you describe.

However, before you go that far....after putting in the new plugs are you positive you got the spark plug wires correctly located ? Crossed wires could also cause a backfire.

Good luck!

How do i change a 1997 mirage timing belt

This is a hard job to do if you have no experience please don't hurt your self,,,,first raise the car remove tire remove all belts, remove a/c bracket, timing belt cover put jack under oil pan and raise the motor remove side engine bracket set a side remove top valve cover remove the spark plugs and turn the camshaft flywheel clockwise and bring # 1 piston at top dead center (the highest point) check the crankshaft should align at the mark loosen timing tension remove belt,do reverse procedure..

1997 grand am won't completely turn over

Remember, there are only three things you need for combustion. air, fuel, and spark. If your car isn't starting you are missing one of those things. If your car is backfiring it most likely is a timing problem because the spark is happening at a time when either of the valves should be closed but the are open and that is why you hear the backfire. I believe some of these cars have a timing belt and if you are off by a few teeth (I.E. the teeth on the belt have been sheered off the belt) it could cause a backfire.
One way to check for spark is to take the end of a spark plug wire off and set it lightly back on the spark plug or coil and then crank the car (or have someone else crank the car) and if you are getting spark, you will hear the snap or crack of the voltage going across the wire jumping the arc you made when you pulled off the spark plug wire and didn't put it all the way back on.

Hope that helps. Good Luck
