SOURCE: 2003 F350 Intrument Cluster

If everything keeps going like that then it sounds like its a problem with the onboard computer. The computer controls all the guages and would explain why they all fail at the same time.

SOURCE: what does the word donE mean in the instrument cluster

It will flash done on the cluster after you turn the key on and off three times and it gets to the end of the trouble codes. Have you checked for power to the starter in the crank position?

SOURCE: entire instrument cluster on dash flashes, and trip meter

Sounds like there IS a loose connection. There is a large connector on the back of the speedometer cluster. You'll have to pull the cluster and that's no easy chore. Sometimes the connectors get corroded also.

Before you tear into it, CAREFULLY push the entire cluster forward to make sure it is snapped into place. Push in a couple of spots using the palm of your hand and a soft cloth so you won't scratch the plastic cover.

Good Luck . . . . . . .

SOURCE: changeing instrument cluster lamps?

the trim surrounding the cluster will be removed at first. Screws are surrounding this trim and needed to be removed
Next remove the retaining screws to the cluster. You may need to shift the shifter to low gear to remove the cluster. Block the rear tire when doing so
Gently remove the cluster and you will see the bulb sockets in the back. They simply unscrew out a half turn

How to remove instrument cluster on 1988 Ford econoline 350 van

There are screws in the top and bottom of the bezel. You take those out and ease the bezel off the steering column. Then the cluster has screws in the top and bottom holding it in the dash. Once those are loose, be careful pulling the cluster out. If you have an auto, you need to disconnect the shift indicator cable. It's a piece of fishing line looking wire in a plastic tube. It wraps under the column and around to a retaining stud. Ease it off and lift the cluster out

Dash remove

I found some good information and step by step instructions on you tube. Be aware that if you change the instrument cluster the vehicle will need to be reprogrammed by a Ford dealer and is VERY costly!
Van won't start unless the new cluster is coded. Good luck

I have a 2000 ford windstar that I tore the ignition out the theft light is on and wont start.can I change the steering column and the computer and get it to start without taking to dealer.

Not exactly.
If you replace the key lock and the sensor is functioning, you should be able to start the van.
The computer and instrument panel are in sync, so if you replace either component they have to be reset by a Ford dealer. The sensor in the key lock sends a signal to the instrument cluster, and if the signal is right, the cluster sends the signal to the computer which then activates the necessary circuits to start the engine. The key code has to match the cluster and the computer.

All the thing's your having problems with are controlled by the computer's an communication network . (FEM) - front electronic module , insturment cluster , (REM) - rear electronic module. etc... It's probably a loose ground connection somewhere . The headlamp switch is a electronic input to the insturment cluster , the insturment cluster is hooked to the SCP - serial data network . The insturment cluster electronic's (computer ) microprocessor sends a message to the (FEM) to turn on light's , the front electronic module will then suppy a ground to the headlamps circuit turnning on the headlamps. Samething for the wipers an turn signals an horn too .

From looking at a wiring diagram i would look at ground connection G-304 . Do you know what a body ground is ?
This ground is located How to troubleshoot headlights intermittently on and off with headlights...

1down vote Basically your headlamps are controlled by a computer. The Front Electronic Module (FEM) to be exact. The FEM grounds the headlamps when it wants to turn them on. This system was an early Multiplex design that reduced wire and total circuits where the modules communicate on a single serial line, now referred to as the CAN Bus (Controller Area Network). You will likely need a scan tool to diagnosis the car, and not a cheap one, but a professional model. You many even need a factory scan tool, though I doubt if for a Ford. Outside of security theft deterrent systems they allow the aftermarket professional scan tools to access their systems.
So where do you go from here? With or without a scan tool, the grounds are a good place to start.
G303 are the main ground for the FEM.
G304 is connected via C179 (C means connector) and through S139 (S means splice)
G304 is located behind the LH cowl panel C179 is located behind the LH side of the instrument panel S139 Dash panel to headlamp junction, near T/O to C192 Front Electronic Module (FEM)
You can see the FEM, G304, and C179 in the picture below. Outside of checking the connections and wiring there is not much you can do without a scan tool.

The problem is your instrument cluster. Your type of vehicle is notorious for the instrument cluster failing. It will need replaced, or rebuilt.

The light for my odometer screen no longer works. Im assuming its a fuse problem. Where in the van would i find the fuse box? And where to buy the replacement? I bought my van used with no manual.

It is not a fuse problem. if that light is blown, and the rest of the instrument panel works, you will have to replace the instrument cluster in order to recover the light.
