I check it every 2 weeks, the oil level is fine, and i change it every 3,000 miles or less. the colour of the smoke is white

  • rwruby Jan 27, 2009

i actually have one more question, when i go to break, the lights dim when i push the pedal, and most appliances do that when im in idle. Would changing the battery help or does it have something to do with my alternater?

white smoke indicates a blown head gasket... check the oil to see if there is any antifreeze in it

Hello;
First, raise the hood and check your oil level. If it is full how often do you have the oil changed? Depending on how you drive , it needs to be changed every 3,000 to 7,500 miles. So here is what could be going on. The engine could be sludged up, clogging oil passages. As the oil warms up, it thins out and gets into the orifices. Knocking goes away. The engine needs to be flushed out and the filters changed. If you change your oil religously then I would look at the lifters or cam followers for bleed off and wea. Hope this helps.
Thanks;
Rich

The most common issue is what is called piston slap, GM's official stance is that it will not cause any long term damage, in other words it is just annoying, my Corvette has the same noise, goes away in about 2 miles, had it to the dealer and that is what they said, and i agree with them because it has never gotten any worse after years or hard use/.

Engine knock

caused by hot and lean.
which engine.??? at least 3 choices.
most have knock sensors. and will not knock.
if it really is knock then that is serious.
knock means detonation or ping.
if its just noise say that,
real PING happens under load.
1: check fuses.
2: check knock sensor for outside damage.
3: SCAN the PCM. do you have any DTC errors/
4: do a full 60k tune up. maybe its lean because the fuel filter is clogged.

Have a 96 geo prizm that won't accelerate very well and is making a knocking sound any ideas?

knocking is a big thing, its a cry for help.
can be minor to horrific
knocking parked? or only driving.
in neutal or park?
knocking hot block, or cold block or both? at what RPM>/
only real oil pressure gauge works, not the idiot lamp
when the lamp comes on at 3-5psi, the war was lost.
my 96 makes 55psi cold just cranking, want a video of that?
find the knocking first.

if can ,be knocked , parked.?
id check oil pressure. real.
use a $5 stethoscope. find it.
drop all belts. to see if an accessory device knocks. (5min test max cold to start, yes, water pump dead)
PS/AC/ALT dead too.
still knock>
listen at valve cover. coming from there.
is the timing belt is old over 60k thy all shard and some knock load hitting that cover, it a for sure thing, skipping the 60k mile service point,
exhast header collerctor fange gasket , bad, allowing bang band bang as the 2 flanges pound themselves to death.
the top of the engine, see induction pips. (AIR) those mounts for sure can bang away, bolts missing.

knocking:
1 overheated the engine so bad its pinging? knocks up hills?
2: say exaclty when and not you get the knocks.

Diagnostic code po325 what does this mean

Hi the error code relates to the PCM Knock Sensor Circuit

A knock sensor tells the engine computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking", that is, exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can be damaging to the engine if prolonged. The computer uses this information to tune the engine so that it doesn't knock. If your knock sensor wasn't operating properly, so that it was always indicating a knock, the engine computer's response may have been to change the ignition timing on your engine. The knock sensor generally threads into the engine block. This P0325 code may show up intermittently or the Service Engine light may be lit constantly.
Symptoms

You may notice drivability problems including a lack of power and perhaps some hesitation. There may also be other symptoms.
Causes

A code P0325 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

* The knock sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
* There is a wiring short/fault in the knock sensor circuit

Possible Solutions

* Check the resistance of the knock sensor (compare it to factory specs)
* Check for broken/frayed wires leading to the sensor
* Replace the knock sensor

Hope this helps
Steve

96 Suburban v8/7.4L/454 K2500, Knocking Noise??

sound like an internal engine problem. either one or more of the pistons has "piston slap" and that knocking will diminish as the engine warms up or possibly a rod bearing is worn out. have a tech do a manual oil pressure test to make sure the oil pump and main bearings are ok. piston slap or knock that decreases when the engine warms up is not that serious, but a rod bearing knock or possible oil pump failure should be taken care of asap.

'96 VW Golf GL with 2.0 motor. Cold start knock

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
