I had this problem too with my 2004 Explorer
Don't know if it had anything to do with it,but i had washed down the engine compartment the previous afternoon. After having it towed to the dealership they told me it was the throttle body. They replaced it and all is good

Locate wire on fuel tank sender unit ( usually thru plate under or behind back seat or underneath vehicle) remove wire (Push on clip) ond with ignition on earth wire and see if gauge goes to full If it does it's the tank unit stuffed so replace the tank unit otherwise could be gauge it's self Try this first

The check engine light will represent fault codes that the computer is sensing. Have a mechanic, or go to your local auto parts superstore and have them scan for the fault codes. This will at least give you an idea about some of your problems.
