Question about 1994 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Will not start some times

I have a 1994 Honda accord. Some times it will not start, but if you wait sometimes 5 min. or longer it will start. Some time it has taken as long as and hour to start. Do you have any Ideas? Some one told me to get a person to check it with a computer but they could not find where the computer is located at. Help please!

Does the engine turn over when it won't start? Or not at all? I assume it cranks over, but does not fire up and run. Correct?

Have you heard of the main relay under the driver's dash on those? Sounds like a good candidate for main relay or a faulty circuit breaker. Tell me more about what happens when it does NOT start.

Have the same problem with a suzuki - someone has told me it is the alarm immobiliser which kicks in when the engine is hot. Others have said its the starter motor brushes expanding when hot which prevent a proper contact being made.
Either way, still have not fixed mine yet !!

Got 1994 honda accord dx 5sp, problem when try to start engine for first time of the day have to wait about 5 min before check engine light will go off and fire up the fuel pump. if i let car idle or run...

sure can be lots of things, but in this case only 3.
1-bad engine, (lost compression , warm or hot.) 150psi is min.
2-bad spark, the spark parts can in fact fail for hot soak,
the parts can get to a specific range of temperatures and fail.
this is very common type failure, on all EFI cars. (fancy spark)
3- last is #3 bad fueling. (too much or too little)?

this works on all cars, that RUN most the time, but not today.

why not troubleshoot it , when it fails. that is the #1 best time to
diagnose any machine, can't diagnose a working machine.
first off , i have no idea what this means.
"wait about 5 min before check engine light will go off ."
the CEL must com on , key on,
if not the ECU bad or you lost 12vdc power to the ECU. (loose fuse?)
then you start the car, my guess, is the 300rpm CEL rules is fooling you, most cars the CEL goes out at 300 rpm (even cranking as the ECU thinks the car is started... its kinda dumb.
after the engine starts, the CEL MUST go out,
if the CEL sticks on, you need to pull the DTCs. scan it.
on this car it has a jumper plug to do the scan. (OBD1 old car)
so when the car dont start
you pop the hood, and pull a new spark plug out of right picket.
and do the spark test, (classic for 100 years)
is the spark good,? yes, must be fuel if ,not , spark is bad
this takes me 2 min flat, ready at all times, if parked. and stalled.
so you have good spark. i then try all 4 cylinders. good to all 4?
yes, good, no , bad dizzy
good spark
it must be fueling failure.
1: pull #1 spark plug(any) is it wet with fuel , its flooded.
2: same is it dry, lost all fueling.

once you get here, we know what part of the system is failing.
and for sure if compression x4 is 150PSI on all 4 hot, and WOT.

btw 2, the operators guide shows how to start a flooded engines.
WOT cranking, all EFI cars, for that matter.

92 Honda is hard to start when cold...sometimes it will start fast, but most times it takes over 5 mins to start

very common change the temp sensor for the computer. it thinks it is warm when it is cold and doesn't inrich fuel like a choke would. causing to have a hard start. good luck
