Question about 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Please excuse my lack of knowledge. This is the wife of the car guy looking for answers The chain of problems we believe are all connected are 1. Both lower brake lights blew at the same time. Tailgate brake light still worked. Replaced fuse and no problem since. 2. Jeep would not start. It did not crank at all. No sound no clicking. Could not put jeep in neutral from on position. In accessory put it in neutral and it started right up. This was intermitten when it started after a few tries it ran strong. 3. Driving in city and the dashboard dies. Jeep still running fine still have radio still have heat controls, door controls work, just no gas/odometer/tach/etc. Sentry key light stays lite. 4. While trying to diagnose problem #2 the battery is disconnected while taking the dashboard apart to make sure there is no short. Once everything checked out and no shorts battery is reconnected and now the Jeep will start and cut out after 5 seconds. We took the Jeep to the local dodge dealer for a diagnostic they immediately said it was the PCM. We had already looked online before bringing it to them and asked if it could be wiring harness, skim, etc. They flat out said no its the PCM for $800. We took the Jeep back home. We bought a remanufactured programmed PCM installed it and still have the same problem. Starts and stalls. Our next step is the CPS as we have read over 30 people having the exact problem and this fixed it. We have only owned this for 2 months and the previous owner did not have one single problem of this sort (they are friends so not lying to sell it as their out freezing helping to fix it). The question is is it the CPS or the sentry key. Could the car be locking the ingition out and preventing the jeep from starting. The old PCM will not communicate with the diagnostic hence Dodge's expensive fix situation. Has anyone found the direct fix for this problem that 100's of owners are having?

no scan tool brand stated, nor model
it MUST be J1850 VPW certified(jeep PCI bus)
and type, my scan tool is dead,and car runs like crud. (tells all we need to know)
OK BIG PROBLEMS
all easy to discover , with a voltmeter,
ever heard of that?
error1, park lockout is law,,and needs working brake lamps
to shift out of park .. (usa cars, on a usa forum)
seem like the fuse to the cluster are bad.
are you blowing lots of fuse/?
battery pull and you forget that PCM needs to relearn idle.
so.... that was normal
before working on any complex car, read the service manual first
not make blunders.? there some that can be tragic.

if comm fail,i it can be fuse on pin 16 of DLC connector (scan port)is blown
if pin 16 is hot,12vdc
then the comm buss is shorted
a real TECh unplugs all comm buss,(CCD,PCI) modules 1 by 1
to find how WHO is shorting the buss out.
in real computer this is well known,many shops never took the class on networking,find a real ASE shop
that knows jeeps, and networks

you'd have seen if he Immbolizer as tripping.
with codes just for it, bad key ,bad skim module
he ASD relays drops and engine is stalled on purpose buy the PCM
the ASD drops for 7 reason or more (ONE IS CMP OTHER IS CKP AND MORE) NO NEED TO GUESS.
and the PCM ALWAYS TELLS YOU WHY!
IF THE NETWORK IS FAILING!!!! PCI?
SO WILL THE CLUSTER!!!!
THE CLUSTER IS DATA DISPLAY USING DATA.
ITS NOT A OLD SKOOL HAND WIRED, DISPLAY,
NOW. ITS A COMPUTER BASED DISPLAY
NOT UNLIKE A DESK TOP COMPUTER USES.
THIS JEEP USES A PCI BUSS NETWORK.
THE PCI BUSS ON CAR, TALKS TO 22 MODULES
IN SAID CAR, IVE ONE SHORTS.ALL GO NUTS.
JUST LIKE AN OVER TURN GAS TRUCK CROSSWAYS
ON A FREEWAY, SAME THING,

learn to use a scan tool
and avoid Dodge man like plugue.... find
or real jeep shop.
the DLC needs 12vdc on pin 16 this is ALWAYS FIRST.

1`:12vdc power dead on pin 16, dlc, fuse blown for sure.
2:comm still fail, one of 22 modules, shorting PCI network
short and dead accurate.

have u replaced the crankshaft position sensor? do u have any computer trouble codes? Kragen or Autozone will run the test for free.

Hello, I would assume this is your fuel pump inside your tank. I would first however do some basics like a general tuneup. For starters I would replace your spark plugs and wires, rotary cap and button and check your fuses. Run some injector cleaner through your system. You know quick simple cheap things before you get to the fuel pump inside the gas tank which can be kinda expensive. The warm up then dies can be caused by, "blownout or fouled," spark plugs. I hope this gives you a general direction in which to go. A sidenote is that coil packs do not normally run an igntion code and I for one do not like them becuase they are expensive.

check the fuel pump fuse/relay, could be just bad enough to cause an intermittent start/no start. and check fuel pressure,spark and the crank position sensor.

SOURCE: I HAVE 95 JEEP GRAND
Had similar problem with 96 Jeep 4.0L engine. Tracked it down to the connector for the distributor pickup. Spliced in another connector and hasn't stalled since. Also, have you had any codes? Easy way to check on Chrysler products: turn key on, off, on, off, on (not starting) and watch the 'engine light' on the dash. It will flash off/on. Count the flashes with short pauses between and longer pauses between code. When you get a 5 count and 5 count, that is the end. This may also help
