Question about 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd 4.0 starts and cuts out. Sentry key light up no gauges. SCAN TOOL DEAD, PCI- BUSS DEAD OR NEAR DEAD.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. This is the wife of the car guy looking for answers The chain of problems we believe are all connected are 1. Both lower brake lights blew at the same time. Tailgate brake light still worked. Replaced fuse and no problem since. 2. Jeep would not start. It did not crank at all. No sound no clicking. Could not put jeep in neutral from on position. In accessory put it in neutral and it started right up. This was intermitten when it started after a few tries it ran strong. 3. Driving in city and the dashboard dies. Jeep still running fine still have radio still have heat controls, door controls work, just no gas/odometer/tach/etc. Sentry key light stays lite. 4. While trying to diagnose problem #2 the battery is disconnected while taking the dashboard apart to make sure there is no short. Once everything checked out and no shorts battery is reconnected and now the Jeep will start and cut out after 5 seconds. We took the Jeep to the local dodge dealer for a diagnostic they immediately said it was the PCM. We had already looked online before bringing it to them and asked if it could be wiring harness, skim, etc. They flat out said no its the PCM for $800. We took the Jeep back home. We bought a remanufactured programmed PCM installed it and still have the same problem. Starts and stalls. Our next step is the CPS as we have read over 30 people having the exact problem and this fixed it. We have only owned this for 2 months and the previous owner did not have one single problem of this sort (they are friends so not lying to sell it as their out freezing helping to fix it). The question is is it the CPS or the sentry key. Could the car be locking the ingition out and preventing the jeep from starting. The old PCM will not communicate with the diagnostic hence Dodge's expensive fix situation. Has anyone found the direct fix for this problem that 100's of owners are having?

no scan tool brand stated, nor model
it MUST be J1850 VPW certified(jeep PCI bus)
and type, my scan tool is dead, and car runs like crud. (tells all we need to know)
all easy to discover , with a voltmeter,
ever heard of that?
error1, park lockout is law,,and needs working brake lamps
to shift out of park .. (usa cars, on a usa forum)
seem like the fuse to the cluster are bad.
are you blowing lots of fuse/?
battery pull and you forget that PCM needs to relearn idle.
so.... that was normal
before working on any complex car, read the service manual first
not make blunders.? there some that can be tragic.
your dealer SUX,!
if comm fail,i it can be fuse on pin 16 of DLC connector (scan port)is blown
if pin 16 is hot,12vdc
then the comm buss is shorted
a real TECh unplugs all comm buss,(CCD,PCI) modules 1 by 1
to find how WHO is shorting the buss out.

in real computer this is well known, many shops never took the class on networking, find a real ASE shop
that knows jeeps, and networks
his $800 blind guess, sux

IF you scan tool plugs in and works
you'd have seen if he Immbolizer as tripping.
with codes just for it, bad key ,bad skim module
he ASD relays drops and engine is stalled on purpose buy the PCM

the ASD drops for 7 reason or more (ONE IS CMP OTHER IS CKP AND MORE) NO NEED TO GUESS.

learn to use a scan tool
and avoid Dodge man like plugue.... find
ase shop
or real jeep shop.

the DLC needs 12vdc on pin 16 this is ALWAYS FIRST.

1`:12vdc power dead on pin 16, dlc, fuse blown for sure.
2:comm still fail, one of 22 modules, shorting PCI network
short and dead accurate.
here is my 2008 can-bus
your page looks just like this in YOUR
but is PIC, and is diagnosed same way.
in my case 29 modules to short. see???????????

    why did the dodge joker
pick that most expensive, module of the 22
    to replace, ???????
    1: gross incompetence (some are)
    2:;raw bold crook.

think like this old skool system
    the dome light
one switch shorts, and lamp is on.
see? remove all switches, put back 1by1 to find bad one, applies here.

same on networks, if on network member
    shorts, the networks is dead
    its just 1wire simple network
    super basic, network.
one can also measure the 2net work pins
voltage and if wrong, pull modules until
    it reads correct.
0 to 7.5v square waves (serial data)
    is what is there now.

    read step 6 here
    no scope tests

    that is how it works.
I bet you never know it was this complex
and your dodge guy must be old and no ASE classes on can-buss or pCI buss.

a shorted , PCI is no fun.
can short to 0v, or 12vdc
    both are bad.

    welcome to networking 101
    scan tool dead.
    simple problem (1 short)
    tedious to find.
    got a voltmeter?

my guess the network complexity scared you
    and Mr,dodge man.
well it should!, we can. tell you all step to find it. sure can.

easy, it's easy or tedious, (fate )
    easy first voltmeter hand.
    blown pin16 fuse, yes/no.
if pin 16 (DLC) measures 12vdc, then its good. end big easy peasy
    what's next.?
you must pull all modules 22 of them
to find which one is shorted.
the one pulled that makes the SCAN too COME ALIVE IS BAD, TEDIOUS BUT NOT HARD AT ALL.
sorry but I didnt invent networks (Al Gore did)
and most DEAL with them all.

THE WJ book is free to read
    posted 300+ times
It will not teach how to fix a network
it assumes you took a class in one.

    why networks
saves tons of copper, and weight, (CAFe ?)
    Down side, 1
    only one,
if one of 22 modules, short the PCI
    buss network ,
    comm;s go dead.

it's like yelling on the beach
nobody hears you over the sound of he surf.

the PCI is only 1 wire.
it forms a SHARED 1 wire network.
it uses a protocol that only one talker at a time or they collide.

this is why folks lacking good $150 scan tool
    get nowhere fast.

#1 on this forum, endless posts
    going NOWHERE.

using the wrong scan tool is not going to work, use only modern tools , 2008 and up,
    called ISO 15765 CAN ,certified.
support can-bus and all others older too
like JEEP CCD , and PCI/SCI bus.
    at the DLC> 16pin jack.
pin 14 or 16 not depopulated on the scan tool
    is best tool.
    this 2002 uses J1850 VPW standard (aka,,PCI)
pin 2: is the pin on this car that must work.

then pin 16 pin 12vdc power not dead, always a fuse caused problem.

    now the other-way(min tools)
    you own a $10 voltmeter,a DMM it's called
all shops on earth splurge and have it.

DLC pin 16 at 12vdc key on
DLC pin 2 is dead says your scan tool guy.
    PCI is dead,but why.
The PCI Bus system operates on a 0 to 7.5 volt square wave.(called data)

oops no scope to see it mess up bad,
0v shorted to ground, anywhere this line.
12vdc, gross error, shorted to power feed.
    DMM meter: simple checks.
so out comes the $10 wonder box, that DMM
    dialed to volts.
black lead of meter to good ground
Pin 4/5 of DLC is just that.
we use super fine needle probes to keep DLC from pin damage.
pin, 2, touch dmm red test lead to 2

If the volt reading is varying between 0.5 and 2.5 volts, the fault is not present at this time.
The DMM averages this fast moving
digital signal (called a Square wave)
this method last is not 100% SUREFIRE proof
only a SCOPE does that magic.

Thats it, there are looks online endless
    PCI buss ,horrors,
i think my most puts them all one post
    (my replys)

SOURCE: 1997 Neon dies, starts after electric fuel pump relay swapped

Hello, I would assume this is your fuel pump inside your tank. I would first however do some basics like a general tuneup. For starters I would replace your spark plugs and wires, rotary cap and button and check your fuses. Run some injector cleaner through your system. You know quick simple cheap things before you get to the fuel pump inside the gas tank which can be kinda expensive. The warm up then dies can be caused by, "blownout or fouled," spark plugs. I hope this gives you a general direction in which to go. A sidenote is that coil packs do not normally run an igntion code and I for one do not like them becuase they are expensive.

check the fuel pump fuse/relay, could be just bad enough to cause an intermittent start/no start. and check fuel pressure, spark and the crank position sensor.

Had similar problem with 96 Jeep 4.0L engine. Tracked it down to the connector for the distributor pickup. Spliced in another connector and hasn't stalled since. Also, have you had any codes? Easy way to check on Chrysler products: turn key on, off, on, off, on (not starting) and watch the 'engine light' on the dash. It will flash off/on. Count the flashes with short pauses between and longer pauses between code. When you get a 5 count and 5 count, that is the end. This may also help

you used voltmeter at the pump?> or just didnt here it run
do say this...please. details, matter....
it told you low fuel is it? is the fuel gauge near "E"
why not state that first.?
dead gauges, be 1st right, smacks of gross power loss.
right>? not clear to me what no gauges means.
but the voltmeter is #1 no?

did you tests fuse that look ok. fuse that look ok can be bad.
no gauges, means all dead, no movement,
well the fuel gauge must work , does it, does it match reality?
cranks but never runs. good input there.

does not run for the jeep 3 seconds.? (ASD rules)
no 12vdc power to pump, when cranking,?

I can help.
WJ jeep
this jeep has a voltage gauge, it must read 12v keyon
if not power is lost, or battery low.
if cranks that tells me the fues blew.
skim cuts spark and fuel, not cranking btw.
2002 cluster
see that lamp 12, if stuck on car will never start but will crank.
the lamp falses if skim is not working or stays on for ******* key.
IF You can not scan a modern jeep then it can near impossible to diagnose (a hard cold fact)
IF the ASD fails to work, the PCM tells you every time
all 8 ways for it to fail.
but that takes a scan tool (any modern scanner works,)

1997 jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 4wd. All the gauges dropped and now won't start. I've replaced the computer but still nothing

wont crank or cranks fast but will not start,????????
wow first thing replaced the most expensive part on car.? why ?
replace PCM. ! wow ! what if used PCM (is it used) is bad,?
if so now 2 problems, Compounding every thing,.....$$$$$$$$

last time it ran was 1 week ago , 1 year, what? miles on it?
bad fuel in tank , old?
why not elaborate that key symptom first.?
there is a cluster there.
gauges, warning lights. many, all must glow.
lets do this dance, posted 100 times;. now.
  1. head lights work not dim? key in pocket.
  2. key on, not cranked ! (covered in missing oper. guide)
  3. all warning lights glow, if not battery is weak or fuses blown.
  4. and the CEL lamp there, it must glow or the PCM has no power ,that too, is a blown PCM fuse. fact. (or lamp dead)
  5. lets say the lamp was dead,CEL the scan tools hows status of the lamp and all else, so use a $10 scan too now. does it communicate with the PCM and show all sensors and not DTC errors? scan it now, cant fix cars now , with no scan tool , buy one, and win on old cars. big time with pay back !!! heck all cars. 96+
  6. so the CEL glows now, good, now you crank, now, does the crank shaft turn fast cranking, yes/no. yes !
  7. then check for spark , got spark x 6?
  8. got spark well test fuel works now , even with dry gas tank.
  9. is the ASD relay closing and then dropping,? ( yes, and yes)
  10. then that means the PCM cut fuel , on purpose !!!!
  11. the scan tool tells you why. it did drop for sure. scan it.

1993 to now , MR. ASD 101

PCM is the engine EFI brain, it runs all spark and all fuel all the time. it also dumps the ASD to stop engine fires, by law.
confuses many, and all cars have this, one way or the other,
all EFI cars.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Security Key Flashing/ Wont Crank after dead battery

A flashing key symbol normally means an invalid key. Do you have an other key to try? That all the gauges stay at 0 seems to point to a PCI data bus problem. Was the jeep parked outside or at least standing in the rain? Many times water ingress in connector C200 up in the passengers footwell area is the problem. The connector must be removed, cleaned/dried and reconnected. Ofcourse the source of the water ingress must be found, which many times comes from the windshield.

How do I program a new Keyless entry remote to my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

Programing Sentry keys: 1. Dealer-Programming additional Sentry Keys (requires ONE original key)
In situations where only one key is available, keys must be programmed by the dealer via the Secured Access Method. The Secured Access method applies to all vehicles. This method requires the use of a DRBIIIt scan tool and will also require that you have access to the unique four-digit PIN code that was assigned to the original SKIM. The PIN code must be used to enter the Secured Access Mode in the SKIM. This PIN number may be obtained from the vehicle owner, from the original vehicle invoice, or from the DaimlerChrysler Customer Center. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information for the proper Secured Access method programming procedures.

2. Self-Programming additional Sentry Keys (requires TWO original keys)

"A" through "G" below is a quick summary of the steps that are required for programming. Following this list, "1" through "6" takes you through the same process in greater detail.
Quick Steps:
A. Purchase a blank key and have it cut
B. Insert original key #1 into ignition and turn to On
C. Wait 5 seconds and turn key to off
D. Immediately insert original key # 2 into ignition and turn to on
E. Wait 10 seconds for SKIS indicator in dash starts to flash
F. Turn ignition off, insert new blank key and turn ignition back on
G. Once SKIS light stops flashing and turns off, your new key is programmed

You can find more details in Sentry Key® Immobilizer System (SKIS)

Hope helped with this information (remember rated this help) Good luck.
