SOURCE: 1999 Saturn SL2 shifting problems

I also have a 1999 sl2 saturn . I was having about the same problem but mine also did not want to go into reverse somtimes as well . Ichanged my fluid and filter and put in a good trans conditioner and just about all my trouble went away. The trans filter is just like a oil filter it just screws on the outside of the transmission . It is located down under the air filter housing, and the fluid plug is right on the bottom of the trans.

SOURCE: nissan clutch problem

If your not able to shift into any gear that means your clutch is not engage/disengaging. Check for fluid leaks, you said topped off and fluid levels were low? It sounds like you have a Slave cylinder or master cylinder leak, if its leaking its bet to replace both.

SOURCE: 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V clutch sticking and hard shifting

I am dealing with a very similar issue on my 03 Spec V , So far i noticed the clevis pin was loose and the locking hitch pin that slips thru it had fallen out . this caused the gears to not wanna engage due to the bolt behind the clevis which runs to the master cylinder was not getting pressed in when i pushed the clutch pedal in because the clevis pin was slippin on n off giving me no pressure up top .. I had to remove my lower dash panel in order to get visual n hand access to this pin , it is a tight spot to work in as well . May be easist to remove the 4 14mm bolts that hold yur driver seat in to give ya more room to work n stretch out ur arms

check clutch hydrolics to make sure fluid is not low. Try double clutching. When in neutral, push clutch in, then out and in again and try shifting into low.

2003 Saturn Vue is not shifting properly

Look under the hood beside your brake reservoir You will see another small reservoir for the hydraulic clutch fluid. At this very point, look to see if the rubber cap is on this reservoir tightly, not lifted on any sides. If it is low, than top it up. If it is not low, you may have air in the system. These cars also have a slave cylinder in the transmission that could be wearing as well, but I'd look at fluids first .Hope this is helpful to you. If not let me know and we can delve into it deeper There is a bleeder screw down from the reservoir if you need to bleed it. Just open bleeder a bit and watch fluid coming out. Watch for air blowing out too as it's not supposed to

My saturn ion 2, when in first gear with clutch pedal all the way down. The car sometimes goes by it self like it's an automatic. In addition, I can't shift into anther gear or neutral.-at that point I...

Make sure the clutch pedal mounting bolts and bushings are tight. Check the fluid level for the clutch
master.(same as brake master resevoir)If it is low check for leaks. No visable leaks, bleed the clutch
master. The master is located under the hood, to left
of brake master. Clean any grease dirt etc. from bleeder screw. With small dixie cup 1/2 full of brake
fluid,a piece of rubber hose about 6" long. Place one
end snugly over the bleeder screw, the other end into
the brake fluid.(submerged) Have someone push down on the clutch a couple of times, until there are no air bubbles in the cup. Have your helper hold the
clutch down, while you tighten the bleeder screw.
Hopa this helps.
Good luck

What does the i on the gear shift stand for

Actually there is an "I" on the shifter in a Saturn ION automatic. It means "Intermediate" It's just the shift position between "D" for "Drive" and "L" for "Low"

Gear Shift very stiff, doesnt want to go into 1st gear or reverse

Continued operation like this and $100 would have been the cheap fix. If this is a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Most take Dot 3 brake fluid and it will say on the cap. It is located on the fire wall near brake master cylinder

No gears at all. only done 20.000 miles, but brake resevoir very low as well

Is it a manual transmission (you mention gears)?

Are you sure the brake reservoir is low?

Some manual transmission clutches have fluid reservoirs similar to brake fluid reservoirs. If the clutch fluid gets low, the car will be difficult to shift.

1997 sL1 Saturn manual transmission hard to change gears

The dipstick is behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder and is not the clutch reservoir. It has a red flip top handle instead of a ring like most dipsticks. It was hard for me to find due to engine grease. I had the same problem and was able to see that I was low on fluid (only a little) and adding fluid helped the problem.
